Sorry to break it to you, but nobody in that pub gave a fuck where you were from, or changed their language just to wind you up. This entire scenario only exists in the minds of insecure English men.

    It doesn't. You're wrong.

I've got a longstanding Welsh mate and he says it happens as regular as clockwork in north Wales, rarely if ever in south Wales. It doesn't just happen to English folk it happens to English speaking Welsh people too. I've been out on the piss with him and his mates and seen it happen for myself. They're very familiar with the scenario.

I'd no view on it either way but it annoys the crap out of them.  There's quite a lot of tension between those who speak English only and those who speak both English and Welsh. I've no view on the matter, I barely ever go to Wales as scenic a country as it is.

  2. Very sad to hear this. Was a big part of the very first Bolton team I remember. Missing out on promotion in 75/6 and 76/7 meant be probably hit the first division a bit later than he should have done. A big part of that 77/8 promotion season.

He had a bit of everything as a midfielder as I recall though people a bit older than me will be able to recall better.

I hope we commemorate him really well. Nearly 500 games for the club, a stalwart in the truest sense. I'm sure Big Sam, Paul Jones, Peter Nicholson, Peter Reid, Neil Whatmore and the other great players of that era have loads of good Roy Greaves memories to impart.

Really sad news, a true BWFC legend not just on the pitch but off it.  He scored the first goal that I celebrated properly, I knew it was a big goal whereas before that I hadn't really tuned in to the importance of games.  It was around winter of 77-78 v Spurs in Div 2, top of the table clash, about 33k on, had 0-0 written all over it till Greaves slotted home at the Embankment End in the last couple of minutes, the place went mad.

    RIP.

Blimey, forgot about that.  There's going to be some comically low crowds this week.  I'll make the effort but if we'd been at home yesterday and lost I'd be tempted by TV.  I wonder how many Wigan fans will turn up v Barnsley after yesterday's defeat 😀

Watching our goals on You Tube led to 25 mins of watching other EFL goals and one set of highlights that came up was theirs. Atmosphere sounded like a kid's swimming gala. I believe there's some form of rivalry between them and Barnsley so maybe that'll liven it up.

McAtee, Matete & Arfield suggest 'being bullied' may not be quite so easy this season.

Combinations of Matete, Thomason, Dempsey suggest we might be able to go "dogs of war" in midfield sometimes. Arfield too to some degree though he won't cover ground as well or for as long as the others. None are out and out hard men but all have energy and can put their foot in. It's a different prospect and it might help us close games out better when ahead and dig in when under the cosh.

  6. Others will know better but I read on the BN live feed for the game yesterday that you're allowed 22 outfield players over the age of 21 in a squad. We currently have 24. As such there's going to be a couple of departures before the deadline. We'd be allowed to replace them but only with young players - I'm guessing loanees from Prem or Championship clubs.

Big question is therefore: Who of the 24 will be allowed to leave (loan or permanent)? I'd say Morley and Victor are in the frame but others who may come under the microscope are Gethin, Iredale, big Dan and perhaps even Dempsey. You could argue for Sheehan too. Controversial .. but a debate that's going to be happening in and out of the club in coming days.

  7. Thank god for the cavalry. And there's more of it over the hill with the likes of Johnston, Forino, Forrester and Dempsey if he's ever fit. Excited to see more of the new signings.

The ability to make five subs is a bonus when you are one of the bigger clubs in a division.

Very important win in our first game after that dreadful play off final. Bring on them taffs next weekend.

  8. Looks like a decent signing and certainly strengthens one of the areas of the team that needed to be addressed. Knowledge of promotion from League 1 is welcome, that's a commodity that Maghoma didn't have!

I do appreciate your sentiment on the whole, and I'm not having a go at you specifically.

But, perhaps if the 'vast majority' of people who are peacefully protesting their concerns about immigration are, in turn, concerned about reputational damage to their cause - they should be calling out/self-policing the extremist members of their community who are choosing to riot.

After all, that argument is usually thrown at the entire Muslim community when one of their own does something vile.

People who have views to express on immigration are not a "community". They are everyday folk who have views on everything from tax levels to potholes to social care. The "vast majority" are not protesting their concerns, they are expressing them whether in their own front room, on social media or over a pint at the boozer. The point is it is legitimate to have a view on immigration and in a healthy democratic society folk are entitled to articulate it. The act of doing so does not make them "extreme".

  10. Shocking scenes. Undoubtedly the far-right are involved. They want locking up.

Many, many people in this country have very legitimate and deeply held concerns about immigration. The vast majority are not out on the streets indulging in mindless violence and do not have "far-right" or racist views. These rioters are doing their cause no favours. Nor have the equivalent social disorder problems in other countries in recent times, notably the Republic of Ireland.

I hope the Government recognises that people who have views on immigration are entitled to do so and do not use this reprehensible behaviour to brush those views aide as somehow minority/fringe/extremist.

  11. I'd never heard of the Hungarian team we made our new signing from yesterday. Unsurprising to a large degree but usually there's at least a vague knowledge of some teams in each European country (existing or from previous times) from European competition (Hungary: Ferencvaros, Honved, Ujpest, Debrecen).

Having looked up Fehervar FC today it turned up a nice footballing memory from the 80s. The club actually had a series of name changes a few years ago. Before that period they were known as Videoton - the team who knocked the rags out the UEFA Cup in 1985. That little episode provided a week or two of material to fire back at the multiple filth fans at school during a bleak period for us.

Well ... it bolsters us up in an area that needed addressing and we've made a departure from pretty much all recent transfer business in so doing.

I find these highlights reels really tough to place any store by. Let's see how he does in person.

    Why though?!

    It's just counterproductive.

Do you really want 5,000 Welsh having a big day out on our first home game of season?

We will sell miles more than 500 imo.

No doubt to some degree depends on how we shape up against Orient the Saturday before. Nosedive there and it'll put a good few off bothering.

  14. You genuinely can't place too much store by results in pre-season. The amount of times I've seen us rack up unconvincing results and then have a great start to the actual season, or vice versa.

We need to get players fit and firing for Orient. Every season needs to start well. After Wembley it feels like there's less leeway than ever for an average or poor start.

  15. He does come in for a lot of stick that's over the top. He's a genuine bloke who loves the club. His time as a player shouldn't be forgotten in his legacy here.

He definitely made mistakes and got found out as a manager. His time at Bolton was badly affected by key players not being available - Holden, Muamba etc. But you'd have to guess that over time things would have degenerated anyway
