Although, you've, as a higher rate tax payer, been getting a decent amount of tax relief for those 20+ years, so it's not all as bad as you make out.
For what it's worth, I don't disagree with a lot of what you say, and I can see why many people now avoid initial tax in this country and squirrel it away offshore. By the way, my work colleagues in Netherlands, Germany, Italy* and Spain all pretty much say the same as you......so I'm not sure there is an absolute perfection anyway
*The Italian is the worst of the lot, you listen to him, and you'd think that Italy was completely overrun with ISIS , he reckons it's an absolute shithole of a country to live in, and he'll be moving to Cyprus in the next few years
