Shit Army (shit army) Shit Army (shit army)

Telly says our army is shit.

Some US general has said that just because we battered some Argentinians with frozen puffins, that it doesn’t automatically mean we’re ready for the Chinese or the Russians.

I imagine this comment has been well received by ruddy cheeked day drinkers up and down the land.

I have no idea, so would like to open the floor to those better versed in military matters to put my mind at ease, because I’ve just signed up for Chinese lessons and put selloptape in the corners of my eyes just in case.

Look at the sheer size of each others' forces.

Against either we'd have a big struggle, especially China.

Much of the Russian stuff is old, and somd of their forces not necessarily the best.

China may be a tougher nut.

That's what Nato is for, together with a number of mutual assurance agreements we've been signing recently, with Scandinavian countries for example.

We're also getting into bed with Japan too- the new sixth generation fighter aircraft will be a joint venture with then and the Italians.

Also talk of a huge sales job to Turkey- aircraft, ships etc.

These would boost our industries, and keep R&D motivated.

We got NATO and more importantly the Yanks.

No fuckers coming anywhere near us.

As a standalone unit though, where are we?

Are we basing all our posturing on Andy McNab novels and films about derring-do of yesteryear?

We need to go and crush some cunts.

There was a chart of the various armed forces somewhere. NATO far bigger and, one assumes, superior.

Is NATO not just another EU?

Loads of chit chat and countries having to agree before anything can happen?

I reckon we should leave.

There was something on the rest is politics the other day about how we've got about 50 tanks left as we've run down the stocks for years.

Whatever the number it was very low and way behind some much smaller country's.

What the fuck are we giving to Ukraine then?

It was on that pont they were discussing. We just don't have very many and how it's been a long time problem.

We aren't giving that many apparently because we simply don't have the numbers anymore.

I'm sure I read that it's not particularly in our interest - at least in terms of defence - for us to have a large stockpile of tanks

As an island nation, it's more important to focus on being a sea and air power

Yeah they were discusding that (can't say I've really thought much about it really) but that we should certainly have not dwindled to those levels because of well, situations like the Ukraine.

This is true, but also as an island nation if we want to project power elsewhere then we need tanks.

I would be happy enough to run down our existing tanks and buy the extremely capable Leopards and invest in R&D for air and sea with like minded partners.

We've only just got an aircraft carrier again.
