Think he is from Eccles originally so might be some affinity there. He was pretty sound especially after KW said he was going to Oz to watch the Ashes.

sheff weds apparently

Remember the 3-0 as clear as yesterday, what a night, atmosphere, the ultimate Christmas present. Reidy and Worthington dominated.

Was in corporate the the 2-1 win, I think we broke a premiership record that day too, the first team to win there, whilst going one nil down. At the time Ferguson was the first to start squad rotation and before the game they were taking the piss saying that they were putting out the kids again. Fantastic afterwards, my mate who got me the tickets (an old time Herford fan) phoned his boss, held it up towards the Bolton fans and told him that those are Bolton fans singing you Munich Bastard.

Another game I loved there, was not a win, the Fa Cup loss 1-0. Our following that day was magnificent.

Followed by when JJ had Beckham and Keane on their arses at the 'Bok.

Happy days.

That was some day up until their usual late goal, I remember the reactions in the crowd to everything were magnified about 10 times more than any other game, Okocha had a long range shot hit the bar I think, and even the "oooh!" after it was deafening.

Same with N'Gotty's goal, first time I'd ever seen us score at home against them. Then a few seasons later SKD scoring a really un-SKD goal where he kind of sat the keeper down and placed it home, another where Petrov scored, then of course the Nolan and Ferdinand goals in the 2-2 which feels like a bad scar more than anything else but for a few moments wow.

Only saw the 1-0 in person out of the two "recent" wins there, was convinced right up to the last whistle that there was no way us winning twice on the trot there was ever going to be allowed by football fate. Scenes after that goal were feral, I kind of think probably not as crazy as they might have been in the 2-1, but great enough.

Last thing we know of fixtures between us is Phil Jones running riot through a non existent midfield...

Did both the 78-79 games, plus the Anelka home win.  Was 10 years old for the first two, so memories are also murky.  The home win was electric - sat in Burnden Stand - I can remember Frankie W and Alan Gowling shared the goals, but that’s about it.  As said in other threads footage would be gold dust.  The disbelief at walloping them though still remains.  The away game was fab.  For some reason we were sat in the main stand, so presume was with the home fans.  Didn’t stop us going mad when the winner went in in front of the scoreboard end.  I remember Gordon McQueen I think getting their goal and one of the Greenhoffs (?) missing the penalty at the Stratford End before Frankie W swept the winner in.  Glorious.

We absolutely battered them in the December 78 game. Can’t remember much but Worthy and Gowling both had blinders terrorising their defence. I won’t see us do that again.

The 1-1 when Sir Les put us 1-0 up I was in a bar in Sunny Beach watching it

All game there was Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool all giving it large throughout the game to one another and you could tell it was getting a bit heated

I just stayed quiet as the only Bolton fan in there

When they equalised I booted a stool that went into a table of drinks and knocked them over

Can't remember whose table it was but they thought it was one of the other lot and it all kicked off

I just walked out on the final whistle as no-one knew it was me

went to the 3 in the PL era, but not the others

nothing stands out with the second two, but 01 was the one

hadn't done many aways in the previous PL seasons due to uni, so was all over as many as possible this time round

had been to OT a few weeks earlier for England V Greece but didn't particulary enjoy it, just kept thinking about the forthcoming visit in the league

thought we'd get bummed

in town early doors, think it was Yates on Portland Street about 11am

well oiled by time we got in

perfect angle for Nolan's goal going in, right behind it all the way

Rickett's goal seem to go in in slow motion

escort back to Deansgate was stop start because Utd lads kept appearing every few hundred yards trying to steam in

at one point they stopped us outside the Pomona pub which was full of Utd who were all banging on the windows gesturing and all that, thought of which always reminds me of:

LAND_N_4_3

the mind plays tricks and the memory is hazy but it did seem like about 20 lads were pressed up against the window going mad

anyway, we get to deansgate and the cops won't let us go anywhere but on the platform, regardless of the fact we weren't going back to bolton as lived in manc, twats

as for the near wins

conceeding to Utd in injury time like in 03 was one thing, but going 2-1 up in injury time to only then concede was gutting

as said already, by the time we did win under Megson, it felt like an anti climax

There at the 3 in my lifetime.

2-1 ...we arrived in the ground as Veron scored after the police escorted us all the way from The Pig&Porcupine. Some turn out we had in there early doors. I was a starry-eyed yoof at the time. Buzzing.

The Ricketts goal is still very much up there in the best celebrations Ive ever been involved in. And one of the best Bolton goals in the flesh too.

1-0 only thing I remember about this match was the goal. Think Id upped the drinking stakes from the previous year :)

Not sure about anyone else but the one under Megson felt a little anticlimactic. Its like it was long overdue. After so many kicks in the bollocks by the cunts in the previous seasons under Sam it just didnt have the ecstatic feel it should've done. Id dreamt about beating them at home all my life.

Think by that time they'd sucked out all the hatred I had for them.

Part of me died at the end of that Les Ferdinand game. Previous to that I hated them with every single bone of my body. That incident was one too many daggers to heart. Never again would I allow myself to get in such a frenzy of hate and despair.

Was ace that day in pig & porcupine, couple of their lads came in sniffing ended up shitting themselves, the escort was a pain but worth it to wind the cunts up. Done all but 2 of the Man U games since 74, missed the 1-0 win and the 1980 defeat at their place. The 2-1 win in 79-80 was best for me as it was sweet revenge for the 74 game when they trashed Burnden… also special mention for the cup defeat and in particular the escort up matt busby way which was one of best bunch of lads I’ve seen watching Bolton… they were a little upset but wouldn’t come near us. 🤣

Aye

Walked up onto the platform, waited for the next train to come in and left with all the passengers getting off

Wasn't it close to kicking off in a bar nearby later?

Missed 2 games against them since 74/75, the 2-1 Franky Worthy & the 3-0 when we didn't get any tickets. Loved the Christmas 3-0, I was 16 & the atmosphere hung with the threat of violence all night.

91 was amazing, around 10 thousand whites, the reception for our 58 heroes before the match will live with me forever.

Super Bob in the 1-1 in 98 & the delight in ratface & Schmeichel making a right royal fuck up. Respecting their minutes silence after all the shit the papers posted and the deafening roar of Come on you whites when it ended.

The 2-1 Nolan, Ricketts was superb as not only did we win, we played really well & scored 2 excellent goals.

We survived a bit of a pummelling next time there but good old goldenballs did his bit for us.

But one of my favourite moments (and I can't remember which year) was at their place..... Ivan giving one of their lot money through the partition to buys some ale as there was none on sale in our end....... And the silly fucker actually getting it for him!! 😁

Lots of comments about how the repeated defeats in the first decade of the century knocked the stuffing out of the sense of rivalry on our part. There's no question there's a lot of truth in that. However the five wins are to be treasured - most other clubs have no such memories or only fleeting ones.

The earliest fixtures referenced between us and them on this thread has been 74/5. I've taken that as the starting point to compare our number of wins v them against other local rivals. These are league games only but I don't think there've been any cup wins anyway. City, Liverpool and Everton are excluded.

In short - only Blackburn match us. We win on account of away wins being superior.

Bolton 5 (2 at home; 3 away)

Blackburn 5 (4 at home; 1 away)

Burnley 2 (1 at home; 1 away)

Oldham 2 (2 at home; 0 away)

Wigan 1 (1 at home, 0 away)

Blackpool played them in their 70/1 top flight season, during the rags 74/5 Div 2 season and in their one off Prem season under Holloway in 2010/11 = 0 wins

Preston haven't played them in a league game since 1961 although they have a rag-tag collection of cup defeats v United over the intervening years.

Rochdale, Bury, Stockport, Morecambe, Accrington, Fleetwood, Salford not in this conversation.

Fuck me, I'd forgotten all about that place. That was a walk on the wild side. Not just on match days either.

At Cornbrook?
Proper fucking hole, but not as bad as the nearby Manchester Regiment that I had the misfortune of running for a while in the early 90's

Yes, that’s the one. I used to do some work with Manchester Liners and the forwarders I used were regulars at dinner time.

When I went to see them I had to book the afternoon off from work and we’d finish up in the Clowes. Some Russian matelots had us bladdered on Russian shite.

Did all 3 victories at OT.

The 1-2 Frank Worthy one in 1979 was my favourite, Martin Buchan scored for them McQueen missed a pen.

Bolton fans were buzzin’ and in full wind up mode, the Streford end sang “ You’re gonna get your fuckin’ ‘ed’s kicked in”

Police held us back in the scoreboard end for 10 mins after the game, but it just gave all their lads time to get in their various ambush positions in order to pick off small groups of Bolton, it wan’t an easy walk back to the car.

I’ve still got the ticket - admission was   £1.

Happy Days
