I've travelled in many countries by train. The UK is as bed as it gets. Mostly shit rolling stock, and times not as reliable as they could be. The UK is there with India and Sri Lanka for the train service. France, China, Taiwan and Germany, in my experience are pretty good. 

Travelling off peak, that's fine, but nobody really gives a fuck, that's for kids and the umemployed. Peak time, it's where is important in reality, and when/how a rail service should be judged

I’ve seen rammed. Hong Kong, London Underground, wellington (NZ) Prague and Bolton to Manchester. (See my earlier post about the Test Match experience) All different times of the day. Very difficult to compare but some people do.

Where have you travelled by train that is better than the UK? Regional or international?

Sri Lanka is pretty bad, it's probably the worst I've ever been on. It is definitely worse than the UK though, I do admit that. So, yes, I'll concur it is worse than the UK. India, whilst shit, is probably a little bit better though

Russia was surprisingly good as well. And I was on that fucker for nearly 12 hours both ways. Granted only two trips but each time it was bang on time to the second

Both, normally peak, but also what we might term off peak. I prefer to travel by train in those places as its cheaper, quicker and more reliable than by air

To be honest, not for a while. The last few times, it's not been great, with trains cancelled or delayed. Others tell me its cack up north these days, hopefully it's not as bad as they make out. I'm the South East it's not perfect, but at least it's electrified and the rolling stock is all new. The time keeping can be a bit erratic though

As I mentioned somewhere else, from where I live into Manchester by train was quicker in 1890 than it is now.

Believe it or not ,it’s electrified here in in Bolton. Yes, here in the sticks.  The rolling stock is also new, not all but most. No idea where your info is coming from. It really isn’t grim up north.
