It was shithole but it was their shithole and, courtesy of the pit, had almost full employment and a good spirit.

Probably even more of a shithole now

Yep, a balancing act for sure- obviously they won't have been baling out a loss making industry, but, as you say, maybe unexpected consequences elsewhere.

No doubt it was a battle to curb the unions.
