Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted October 16, 2024 Site Supporter Posted October 16, 2024 Just read a bit of an article (New Scientist) that came up on my Google feed. Never heard of them before, but apparently there are 3 populations of them: north ad south Wales, and a canal in London near to the zoo. Not everyone's cup of tea are snakes, but I find them fascinating. Would you be happy to have one lurking in your garden trees? Quote
SatanGreavsie Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 if an adder turns up amongst them, they start hissing in Welsh. Yeeeeeessssssssssssss indeeeeed boyo. Quote
Not in Crawley Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 Get a few slow worms on occasion. Yet to see an adder outside the Sussex Downs Quote
Sweep Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 I've seen a few grass snakes round here, never seen an adder yet. I'm not that fussed by them, but Mrs Sweep runs a mile Quote
Members Lt. Aldo Raine Posted October 16, 2024 Members Posted October 16, 2024 I'd happily see them wiped off the face of the earth Horrific creatures Quote
Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted October 16, 2024 Author Site Supporter Posted October 16, 2024 Tart! Bit like on those YouTube videos about these snakes, I once had one placed around my neck as a kid. Smooth and not slimy and totally different to what preconceptions may be. Obviously, I'd be wary of some giant constricting type, or a nasty venomous one, but having also seen a grass snake chasing a frog, they're fascinating. Quote

Dr Faustus Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 My mum used to work in a hospice through some woodland. My dad and I would walk up to meet her when she finished her shift. He used to throw sticks up in the trees and when they came crashing down, he’d start hissing and saying snakes were coming for me. I’d shit myself and he’d be pissing his sides. I was about 3 😂 The wanker Been terrified since Quote

I went indoors to get a camera but it had cleared off... not seen it since unfortunately Quote

Just wiki'd them... they're probably resident in the big compost heap near to where I saw it, the heap is near to the river also, it appears they are semi aquatic. Wife has sometimes complained about a bad smell near there, I assumed it was fox piss but it appears they secrete a galicky substance as a defence. They are predated by foxes and corvids, i have foxes, crows and jackdaws, also Red Kites and Buzzards so it's all happening down there when i'm not around. Quote
