Never heard much about this season other than Jimmy Armfield was manager.

Where did we clinch it?

Any duffers on here there?

At home I think  to York or Brentford 3-0

It was York; played Port Vale away in the penultimate game and drew 2-2. We drew the last game at home 0-0 in party mood. Drank all day and ended up in the casino where apparently I fell off my chair at the roulette table and was kicked out 😄

One of my earliest seasons watching us, was 10 at the time, some now-hazy but still fond memories of going with my dad and grandad. We were very hard to get past at home, only lost 1 and only conceded 9 goals. Less so away but solid enough. Still got a load of programmes in the loft, will have to dig them out again ... 🙂

No Brentford we beat 2 nil to give us the championship

You’re right - I was getting mixed up with 1978 when we got promoted and drew against Fulham last game.

but it was York when we got promotion 1973 on Good Friday

Remember JB getting the equaliser  in stoppage time ? after a ball boy got chinned for wasting time

We were 2-0 down & they were kicking us all over the park. They needed to win to go up (dependant on Notts County losing their last match)

Our players didn’t seem that arsed at first but the more they kicked us the better we played .Not sure who got the first of our goals but the ref (Styles ) played a lot of injury time & JB put one in the top corner in about the 94th minute , cue pitch invasion at the end by the travelling contingent .One of their players actually spat at me as I offered my sincere condolences.

As we approached the players tunnel two big blokes blocked off referee Styles & pole-axed him to the ground. Nothing reported in the papers about it although it was pretty viscous.

Needless to say two of us were ambushed in a subway when we came off the ground at the wrong side. One of theirs hit my mate with a snooker ball right on his bonnet , anyway the police arrived in the nick of time & they scapperd .

Always feisty in Burslem.

My mate bought a brand new Austin 1100 drove us to the match , drank about six pints before the game , drove back to Horwich & took the car back to the showroom the day after & got his old Simca banger back.

This is the content 👌 :D

I'll own up to being in the old duffer club, although i was only a kid at the time.

It felt like we were moving in the right direction under Armfield, he was sort of paving the way for what was to come under Ian Greaves a few years later.

We played some good football in that 72/73 season iirc.

I remember going to Port Vale away and it being very lively both on & off the pitch, i remember the time wasting ball boy ( he was a more of a cocky youth ) getting a few slaps after our fans invaded the pitch at the final whistle after our late equaliser.

Can't remember much about the final game of that season, but i remember i  was on the pitch at the end, just a few got on at first but there were thousands on after a few minutes.

Happy Days.

I'd have loved to have seen burnden in full like that. Looked massive.

I only ever knew it with Normid supermarket looming over the pitch.

It was good in those days, as Burndens says, Jimmy steadied the ship after relegation, brought in some solid performers and moulded a good side that could play a bit. Atmosphere was good when crowds were decent, though the facilities on the Embankment were basic to say the least.

Unbelievable sight a fullBurnden before they walled of the top 1/4 even then it was still good size, my first season was 74 so missed the 3rd Div champions season, the period 74-78 was absolutely brilliant time to be a Wanderer…. Loved every second.

We only lost one home game in our promotion season, at home to Blackburn, think there was 33,000 on.
