CambridgeBWFC Posted November 8 Posted November 8 Had a mate growing up all through primary and secondary and in to our early twenties. Had always been close and was the only friend i still had from the early days. With work Women and Families, rellocation (him to Scotland me to Cambridge) we had lost touch though. About ten years ago me and my Mrs decided to go to Florida, planned it all ourseleves and booked it all seperatly. Staying in a good spot off i-drive between the theme parks but really needed a car to get about. We dont have kids so booked to avoid school holidays. One day after we had been at Universal i happened to check FB and this mate had posted a picture of him and his family in a spot that looked familiar to a place i had seen that day. Decided to message, jokingly asking if he was in Florida, as given he has 3 kids i thought it was from an earlier trip. Turns out he was as Scotland have different holidays (which i hadnt known when booking), so suggested meeting somewhere we could both drive to, but he didnt rent a car and was using the busses. No bother mate we will head to you one day, where you staying, turns out the exact same hotel in the next block. Helped reignite our old friendship, see each other now a few times a year at least. Meeting him today at the match in fact as he is a Vale fan. Will be starting my pilgrimage soon! Quote
Ani Posted November 8 Posted November 8 In 1985 I was Deputy President of the Student Union at Bradford Uni, (the only non left wing candidate !). The Treasurer was a guy call Richard. He left Bradford next year , nice bloke never saw again…..untill….. in 1997 I got married and went to Mexico on honeymoon. The flight had to refuel in Florida. On the way back we had to disembark and wait in a big hall before continuing the journey. Needless to say Richard was in there and we bumped into each other. But what was weird was that he had just been telling his missus a story about something that happened to us back in 1985. ‘This is Ian I was just talking about’ was how he introduced me. Quote

I’ve met him a few times in Oz where he now lives. Never knew him before. If Rob is a big cricket fan, I think I’ve met him in both SA and NZ! Winny was over earlier this year and we saw him away at Lincoln. Quote

freds dad Posted November 8 Posted November 8 A few years ago we were sat in the hotel before the match and a bloke came over and asked if he could take the spare seat we had at our table. Of course he could and we asked him to join us as he was on his own. He went on to explain that he had come back to Bolton for New Year after he had emigrated to Canada over 30 years ago and had never been back since. His plan was to go a NYE party where he was planning to surprise a couple he hadn’t seen since he left. Roll onto to NYD and I meet my sister and her husband who tell me a story of a long lost friend from Canada turned up the night before to surprise them. Quote
Dimron Posted November 8 Posted November 8 Here's mine This year I took a seasonal pitch for my caravan up in the North Yorkshire Moors, only 9 tourers and 20 or so statics on the entire site... deadly quiet, over 50s, just how I like it. Dog walking on the single track lane outside, got talking to a bloke doing the same... started comparing notes and we were within one year of each other at Hayward Grammar... I left the 6th form in 1974 and he left in 75. Can't make it up can you? Quote

frank_spencer Posted November 8 Posted November 8 On holiday in Florida same time as my mate the summer after leaving school, his parents are good pals with mine so arrange to meet up at Busch Gardens. Go on the pirate ship and 2 girls from my class were on the ride at the same time turns out they'd done the same thing. So 4 of us on separate holidays in Florida ended up on the pirate ship at the same time. Quote

Couple of days later I meet my new client in Iraq, I thought I recognise him. Camp as they came. It’s only your man in the video. Decent bloke to be fair. Uffe Gartner is his name he’s on my Facebook if anyone wants to hit him up 👀 Quote

MancWanderer Posted November 8 Posted November 8 Age 11 (1975) became best mates at school with a lad from Morris Green. Top lad. I ended up going to uni, he became a copper. Different paths in life but stayed close all those years. Still mates now Lad he grew up with, who was close to his parents fixed my mum’s garage roof and is the proverbial pain in the arse to some folk on here . It is indeed a small world Quote

Underpants Posted November 9 Posted November 9 (edited) Went to South Africa for the cricket. Durban test match we were on a grass banking and we had nowhere to hang our Wanderers flag up so we unfolded it and sat on it like you would do with a picnic blanket. Bloke behind us, with a very broad South African accent, said he was trying to figure out what was on our flag and asked if we were from Bolton. Turned out he went to SA when he was 4 when his mum emigrated in the 50s. He was originally from Egerton near where I lived at that time. He told us that he has never been back to Bolton, or England, since he emigrated but regarded himself as a Boltonian and a Wanderers fan. As coincidences go, and given the circumstances, this isn't a massive one. But it was great chatting to him and swapping stories. He looked like Eugene Terra'Blanche and had the same political views of him. I sometimes wonder...... 🤔 Edited November 9 by Underpants Quote

Rings his mrs and says ' I'm on't beach with a Bolton fan. Yes, couldn't find my phone. I'll be back in a minute.' Amazed I asked my mrs how did he know I'm from Bolton? It says it on your hat you dick. Quote
