Guess the players

Found an old team sheet from a Pontins League Division 1 from December 1998 away at Burnley . A Very strong Wanderers 11 + 6 subs . Can you guess the line up .

Dont expect anyone to know the Burnley team , I'd only ever heard of one of them .

  • I know he trained in Bolton for the 66 world cup. The "had heard" was a reference to a BEN headline / article when we were supposedly after him as manager 😁

  • I played in net against that City team in a trial match at Platt Lane. Still have the extra arseholes they tore me

Arnaur Gunlaugsson , was a twin did we have his brother on trial at one point ? Bjarnar ? (sp)

If so would that be the second set of twins to play for us ?

Bjarki. Can't find any record of him being on trial with us.

Whilst searching, I stumbled across this article about Denilson nearly signing for us in 2009, which I never knew about.

https://www.fourfourtwo.com/person/i-was-given-a-locker-and-a-parking-spot-after-a-trial-at-bolton-but-the-next-day-they-told-me-the-manager-had-opted-for-another-player-instead-i-still-dont-fully-know-why-it-fell-through-denilson-on-almost-signing-for-bolton

And it's literally been covered by Bolton News in the last 20 minutes.

Fair enough . i had it in my quickly fading memory that we brought him over for a trial , certainly cant back it up .

The amount of players we nearly had back then was insane . Rivaldo , Bergkamp , Sukur  , Saviola , Amaruso et al

and "nearly" Pele as manager 😁 in the 80s

(he had heard of us, apparently)

Based on that 4-4-2 article, we dodged a bullet. He barely played a game after that move collapsed.

given he was once the most expensive player in the world, he doesn't have much to show for it in terms of honours

he played 1 minute in the final of the WC when Brazil won it

Wasn’t all that to begin with. He was a major flop when he held the record transfer.

Looked incredible at Copa America in 97 (and I think another international tournament), but never really did much else, certainly not at club level.

Thank God we got Makakula and Puygrenier instead!

The coward of the Battle of Burnden ! Are we allowed to speak his name ?

I forgive him ( just )for being involved in one of my favourite victories.

It always surprises me when I see this pic.

In my mind everything was black and white in the 60s and kids were dressed like chimney sweepers.

Des McBain - "I'm off to New York to begin negotiations with him."

Member of the press - "He's in Spain at the moment commentating on the world cup!"

My first ever trip to Wembley resulted in a 3-0 defeat where we hit the woodwork thrice ! (Always wanted to work that word into a sentence)

According to the official programme what were the two sets of players on that day ?

1-11 with 2 subs each . Bonus point for the attendence to the nearest 1000 No googles allowed !

Aye I should have said 24th May 1986 .

You got 9 out of 9 and within 1k of the attendence . Have I gone from University Challenge to Tipping Point ? Thought it may have been trickier with it being nearly 40 years old .

The Bristol team will be a lot harder if you dare ?!?!?!?

Edited by Krimzon

Fairly sure that Asa Hartford played that day. Struggling to remember anyone else

No idea of any Brizzle players but sure that Terry Cooper was their manager

Did the local salad bar get smashed?
