A former computer studies student, Mr Abbasi was detained in Kunduz, Afghanistan in December 2001 and arrested in January 2002 as an "unlawful combatant". He was born in Uganda and moved to Britain with his family when he was eight. Mr Abbasi studied A-levels and then did a two-year computing course. He is thought to have been a regular worshipper at the notorious Finsbury Park mosque in north London, where the controversial Muslim cleric Abu Hamza gave his sermons. UK officials saw Abbasi in April 2003, but he kept silent for an hour as they tried to talk to him amid his family's reported concerns about his mental health. In November 2002, the British Court of Appeal said it found his detention in Cuba "legally objectionable", but stopped short of forcing the government to intervene on his behalf. Guest ian Posted January 26, 2005 Share Posted January 26, 2005 right we are in the middle of a war. in the circumstances the normal rules of fair play etc etc change. it is not unreasonable to ask them what the fcuk they were doing there before inviting them back into the country to sell their stories and claim compensation for the loss of liberty. i assume if they do get a pay out it will be a fraction of anything paid out to families who sons and daughters have died in the war. i fear we all know the answer to that. Smiffs Posted January 27, 2005 Share Posted January 27, 2005 you cannot keep someone locked up for 3 years without charging them and giving them a trial. in some cases we'd like to, but we can't because they'd get it wrong. if they can't find anything in 3 years, or even make sommat up, then its the folk running the shop who want f??ckin. whether they did or didn't do whatever the septics think they might have done, the way its been handled is akin to a dictatorship and not a democracy. they found nowt in 3 years on these blokes, plenty time so make sommat up, but they couldnt so to me they should go free. if they had found sommat, tried them, and found them guilty then they should be shot. but you cant shoot someone because you think he might have done it. suppose some british backpacker gets set up for importing drugs into an islamic state. the locals would gladly have him shot with no questions asked but we'd demand a fair trial so where's the difference? I mean they are there on their own private bit of Cuba, away from any prying eyes and with all the resources of mobile phone taps, spy satellites and intelligence networks to build upon - and you can bet your bollocks that what goes on there makes Abu Ghraib look like summat out of Enid Blyton. But no concrete results after 3 years. You may say you dont give a fcuk, but the fact is that if you let governments - and by association our government - get away with stuff like this then what comes next? "Ah but", you say, "there's no way someone like me would find himself at the wrong end of a politically motivated bending of the law". Hmmm, well there's some as would beg to differ.... The so called prisoners of Guantanamo have been subjected to all kinds of torture. Allegedly. Including hooding, isolation, stress positions, sleep deprivation, use of dogs, shackles, strobe lights and loud music. Surely, using these methods over a three year (nearly four) period would have lead to more convictions than just the 4 out of 500 detainees. Bush and his administration have become symbols of lawlessness never seen since the Nazis. If there is any shred of evidence, which there is clearly a lack of, against any detainee then charge them. Maybe there is not intention to convict these people. What would be the point? The "deterrent" to imprison them or fine them is no deterrent. Sticking them in a boot camp with electrodes stuck to their scroats may just make them think twice about ragging with the might of the US military. And before we harp on about the "torture" - spare a thought for Ken Bigley's state of mind before he had his head slowly severed. Fight fire with fire!
