Just logged on to start a thread just like this. I am fcuked off with all these pretend football fans getting excited today. People at work are booking half days off to watch the game, and every other fcuker is wearing an england shirt, most of who know nothing about football. WE ARE PLAYING TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO IN AN A GROUP GAME FFS. People are walking around as if today was the final. At work they are asking me if I am going home early (because they know i am a football fan) and when i say i'm not they look at me as if i have lepresy. I then have to explain that the game today is not a big game and we can still qualify for the second round even if we lose. 80% of people i said this too didn't even know this and thought we could be knocked out today. Say's it all really. I've told them to speak to me once the group stages have finished when we get to the business end of the tournament. Most of the hyperactive plastic fans will be fcuked off with the wc by then anyway, and that is when i can and will start enjoying it.

Rant over.

I have to say, I do not have any flags/banners/bunting up at home but this blind jingoism is not doing our once great nation any harm. It's pleasant to see people have a pride in their country. Let's hope this patriotism remaims long after the pound shop flags have been thrown out.

Having said that, if any bird/bloke in the pub come teatime starts loudly spouting shite about football when they blatantly know ball all, I'll be first to stove them in! :D

blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, etc

Christ, hark at misery guts!

There's 31 other teams to take an interest in - let the little Ing-er-landers have their fun and sit back and enjoy the feast.

It doesn't have to be about England, y'know.

You'll be back hurling abuse at our nation's "finest" before you know it.

I finished at 3.45 yesterday to get out of Manc, plain sailing all the way, until it comes to getting off the slip road.

I just hope they were going home early to get the barbies going for their fellas :D

We had one lot of johnny f??ckwits near us in the pub, two pint wonders, vindaloo song types. A couple were ballooning about how they wished they had gone, how they should have gone, etc etc etc.

Usual johnny fuckwit excuses, tickets ,travel, blah blah blah.

And there are millions of them.

They are to football what I am to golf. Every couple of years it seems like a good idea, then after a couple of weeks when the novelty has worn the clobber gets thrown back in the garage.

i disagree.

it was ragging brilliant yesterday driving to work as one of the schools was having an England day with all the kids dressed in the cross of saint george, red and white wigs etc etc.

what is wrong with people for once being proud of being English ???

I know to some extent you are talking about people who for the next 3.5 years will not even watch a game but if it means kids are getting the chance to be proud about who they are and their country i think it is a good thing.

Be nice if there was some middle ground.

It's either blatant ignorance one minute, then flag-waving / face painting / open top bus tours all for the "cause".

Ignoring our chances - Christ, what will happen if we win the thing? Mass spontaneous combustion and Scanners-style head explosions I bet.

Fcuk me, i'm surprised the pc brigade allowed that! Nothing wrong about being proud in being English and it's about time schools took this approach, but soon as we are out (or hopefully champions) all the flags will come down. If you want to be proud being English leave your flags up or on your car after the wc.

bound to happen somewhere

granted, if they were wearing boots, then change them!

Six primary school pupils have been sent home on Thursday for turning up dressed in England football gear.

The youngsters were sent home from Orchards Primary School, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, and told they would have to change before joining lessons.

Cambs County Council spokesman Simon Cobby said the action was taken as the children were dressed inappropriately.

Some were wearing "football boots with studs" which were "inappropriate and potentially dangerous", he said.

Mr Cobby said: "The school does not have a uniform policy, but if the children choose not to wear uniform the school expects them to wear something appropriate.

"The children were asked to go home and get changed and then come back."

He added: "The school fully supports the World Cup and will be celebrating it next week."

All this waving flags and dressing in England football gear is nothing to do with patriotism and more to do with jumping on a bandwagon. How many people are flying the flag of St George on a foreign made car. Those people who are claiming to be patriotic are those whom Dr Johnson was talking about when he said that patriotism was the last refuge of the scoundrel.

The bloke at the back of my house has a flagpole in his garden and on appropriate days he flies the flag of St George or the Union Flag. A lot of the time he flies the Portuguese flag but I don't know why. Since the World Cup began, he has been flying a flag made up of the flags of all the countries taking part.

You can spot the England JCL/ "I just watch the big tournaments" types in the boozer when we score, they go well over the top.
