I think we can all agree that our away form has been abysmal over the last 20 years. Granted, there have been one or two seasons where we???ve done ok but on the whole you rarely fancy us to win away from the Reebok whether we are playing Chelsea or Chesterfield.
Last season, if our away form had been as good as our home form we???d have comfortably finished in the top 4.
If our home form isn???t strong during the forthcoming season we are going down. Argue all you like but deep down you know we are pathetic and spineless away from home. So what is the answer?
Well, the answer is simple. Firstly, sell The Reebok Stadium to anyone who wants it. I have no idea how much a stadium is worth but it cost around ??35million to build so it must be worth ??50million+ in today???s market. That all but wipes out our debt with enough left over to pay up Diouf???s contract and send him on his way.
When England didn???t have a home ground they went on tour around the UK to places that hadn???t seen an England game in decades ??? Sunderland, Manchester etc and this seemed to work magnificently. Every game was a sell-out and the atmosphere superb.
So why can???t Bolton play their ???home??? games around the region? Places like Preston, Chorley, Burnley, Leyland and even Blackburn are crying out for Premiership football ??? we???d get ourselves a whole new legion of supporters which would increase turnover significantly.
Obviously we may struggle at the start as it???ll be like playing 38 away games in one season, but eventually the players will adapt and the home/away divide will be a thing of the past.
Before you get your y-fronts in a twist about my radical idea, at least give it some thought. No one is emotionally attached to The Reebok Stadium, if we can leave Burnden Park we shouldn???t give the Reebok a second thought.
Think no debt, extra revenue and better players. You know it makes sense.
