I remember when I left school (1975) I got a job as an apprentice at an Atherton engineering firm, my mum and dad worked in Atherton as did my brothers and sister, local people at local work places, now, 32 years later, I work in Manchester, my wife works in Leigh, 1 daughter works in Bolton and 1 daughter works in Lowton, what the feck has happened to all the local work places, there used to be:

Howebridge mill

Laburnum mill

Staveleys

Gorton & Blakemores

Prestwich Parker

Barrs

Greenhalgh's (engineering works, not the pie shop)

Ward & Goldstone

Rectalla (curtain factory)

Bullough's (nut & bolt works)

Played football for them for quite a few years mate. They also appeared in Fred Dibnahs Made In Britain. Surely they are still there?

They'll do a lot of work in college. Apprenticeships are dead now - the immigrants can do the job cheaper
