Milton Keynes For 2018 World Cup?

The other stadia will be Sunderland's Stadium of Light, Birmingham's Villa Park, the new Nottingham Forest stadium, Elland Road in Leeds, Sheffield's Hillsborough stadium, St James' Park in Newcastle, the new Ashton Vale stadium in Bristol, Plymouth's Home Park, and Old Trafford and the City of Manchester Stadium

We have better stadia but they are mostly in dogholes like Liverpool,Birmingham,Manchester etc.

Plymouth and Bristol are better places for visitors to spend a few days.

Don't know what the attraction of Milton Keynes is though.

MK gets the nod, Derby, Hull and Leicester get told ta, but no ta!

Plymouth & Bristol will redevelop or build new grounds

they got in because they wanted some representation in the west of the country

Milton Keynes had the celebrity backing of the Fonz

Looks like they're trying to fit in better with (rumoured) FIFA criteria on host cities and only one city having more than two venues. Perhaps Manchester they're confident of classing Trafford and Manchester seperate.

Australia for example will struggle on that rule.

By all accounts the MK submission was the best of the lot.

If we get it i may try and get to the COM for a few games.

If new Anfield isn't built by then i can't see how they can hold Games at Anfield as it is now.

Why shitty old Hillsborough and not the upgraded Bramhall Lane (whose upgrade is happeneing anyway)??

MK's success smells of political bullshit.

Bramhall Lane is nowhere near worthy of being a World Cup Venue, as much as I like the stadium for being a kind of old fashioned ground with character (and a lob sided Kop), it would never meet the criteria to be a World CUp venue as it is. If it is re-vamped then maybe it would, but as I have'nt heard plans for this then I wouldn't know. As it is I wouldn't expect either of the Stadia in Sheffield to be a ground used for the World Cup, however if there was one then at the moment it would be Hillsborough solely due to the capacity.

just noticed sunderland in there too!?!?

I guess the stadium is ok, but the place is a shithole

that and its the only one between notts and the big smoke.

plus FIFA will want to see football taken outside the 'traditional football strongholds' and you don't get anymore non traditional than MK

Indeed. I can't see the Brazil or Spanish national team being too keen on the facilities at the Sunderland West Premier Inn.

Not sure how to post links but if you visit the bbc website you can see the redevelopment plans for Hillsborough. I think this played a major factor in it being chosen as a venue as at present it is a shithole! Saying that some nations would find the facilities 5*

Elland Road is a shit hole. I heard some cock on You're On Sky Sports last night complaining that London should have 6 stadiums for the World Cup. What a fucking prick. Gary Newbond couldn't get the tit to realise it is a World Cup and that it needs to be spread around the country.

What is the criteria required to bid for your stadium to be a venue? I would have thought it needed a minimum capacity of at least 40000.

I can't see what all the fuss is about over venues. We won't get the World Cup in 2018

Freds Dad`s probably correct. But meanwhile the venues have to be sorted. Dissagree with Georges comments about Manchester which in my opinion is a great place.

yup, thats why all of those below thst limit will either permenantly or temporaraly expanded to be over 40k

Are the likes of Plymouth, Bristol, MK, Hillsborough getting super new grounds / redeveloped grounds funded by the FA's World Cup war chest or like the rest of us, out of their own fund raising finances?

How will this work? Seems a tad unfair if the likes of Bristol City will have a 40,000+ new ground but no debt from building it!

That's where the chinless paper shuffling bean counters get involved arm-wrestling over funding. It will come from various sources.

They said on 5 Live last night that FIFA have the last say on the grounds anyway, so the likes of MK may still be left in the cold.

I suppose that MK can, to those who don't know the place, seem as a good option. There is a brand new stadium, with loads of parking all around it (provided the IKEA next door isn't busy..) there is also the MK Bowl near by that has a capacity of around 65K people, so I guess that could be used as some massive fan zone. There is loads of land all around MK that can be used as campsites etc. The rail links to London are excellent, and it's also sat on the countrys main motorway. It's the fastest growing city in the UK, and it's easy (even for numpties) to navigate due to the grid system. I can see why it would be considered.

it is a souless, lifeless place though..................also, as an aside, would you let that Winklemann chap babysit your kids?

Watching SSNs last night I wondered if maybe I was the only person who thought that. I'm glad I'm not alone in that thought. :good:

As far as I recall the revamp is going ahead come what may, thanks to a RL tie-in and the desire to host internationals. Plus its close to the station etc. Hillsborough is just a tired old shit heap.

Sunderland and Newcastle?? Fook that.

Plus there's currently bad blood between Forest and the local authority and the smart money says the new ground wont happen.

Sod it, this is where football started and so they should play all the games at the grounds of the founder members :good:

Would love to see Brazil playing a game in Accrington or Notts County.

Glad to see they're looking to spread out the games all over the country but if there going to do that they'll need to build two or three new grounds.

Ellen Road is shit, particularly for a city like Leeds. They should knock it down and build another ground in its place, I'm sure there's enough room around there and Leeds could fill it (particularly if they got back up to prem)

Anfield and Goodison are awful. They surely couldn't host a World Cup game at either of those two. If Liverpool (as a city) want to be a host city then they should build a combined stadium. Neither team has the money to build a stadium, in the area where both clubs are there is only one place to build a new stadium and they both need a new stadium. I can't think of anything more logical than them pooling together (the governemnt would even give them a shit load of cash if it was part of a World Cup bid). Unfortunately scousers are completely illogical. I've heard some of the arguments against it; "it'll ruin the rivalry" or "we're not sharing with them cvnts", but I would argue that it would be more detremental to the rivalry if Liverpool build Stanley Park and Everton moved out of the city. They could have a magnificent ground, something for the city to be proud of and at the minimun of cost to each club, but that would be just too sensible.

A couple of projects like these are what this bit needs. The reason why we got the Olympics is because we argued there would be a legacy and infrastucture would be improved, we should use the same strategy when it come to the World Cup.
