Foreign Footy Channels

Broadcasters cannot stop customers using cheaper foreign satellite TV equipment to watch Premier League football, an EU legal adviser has said.

http://www.bbc.co.uk...siness-12355022

now i have one of the said decoders and get all 3pm games in HD and with english commentary.

it doesnt stop me going to the games ever, but i can certainly see how it would stop a lot of people.

and it doesnt stop me subscribing to skysports, although im not sure why as i dont really watch many other sports.

is it a problem and is it fukcin up match attendances?

basically should it be banned?

pubs will always exist

not if young un's prefer cheap drugs and supermarket vodka.

sky tv , mobile phones, the internet, and large influx of muslims have put the pub trade into terminal decline.

Big E has just been on, he's after a Greek receiver.

I agree, they will. But as with no TV cameras in football stadia, I also think there should be no TVs in pubs. I go to the pub to see friends and have a chat. If you want to watch TV, get some cans in and stay at home.

Damn right, all the young white girls that used to frequent them are hanging around on street corners now.

Plus for country pubs the drink and driving law and the price of petrol. And fruit machines and numbers on tables, and bloody bores spouting off about everything else.

When you talking about the 1950's? - fuck all to do with it.

i don't mind watching away games on the telly, kinda have/want to these days anyway, until my lads are older anyway.

but any visitors have to get out. im not into watching the whites with nob ed's chirping down my ear for 90mins.

Where did you watch the last world cup then?

1.6 million in 2001 to 2.2 million in 2011 (if i wanted to push the point, i'd go with estimates that put it at 3 million)

whether its due to an 'influx' or reproduction is largely irrelevant if the percentage of potential pub goers who aren't going to go is increasing

folk don't go to pubs cos ales so cheap from the shop

That's just a ridiculous statement. People harp on about how the FA Cup is the greatest cup competition on earth and all that old bollocks, well how could it be if the FA Cup final couldn't be televised? - Many people are interested in how England perform as a team, and enjoy/endure watching the World Cup, so again the vast majority of the football loving nation aren't going to be able to get to World Cups in Russia and Qatar, so again, they don't get to see any of the games, and don't get the watch the World Cup Final, which is supposed to be the ultimate.

Getting back to Bolton Wanderers, if for whatever reason away fans were banned at an opponents ground, would you be happy with not being able to see the game, or at the very least the highlights? - My Step Dad died a few years ago, during the last six months of his life, he wasn't able to attend any games, even though he had been a season ticket holder for the previous 30-odd years, but you think it would be better if he couldn't watch the odd game on SKY or MOTD because he wasn't able to attend in person

Think biff also said on the Andy gray thread that he doesn't like pundits at half time and likes a brass band. Can't be arsed trawling for it though

That is correct. Every match I have been to, I have never had an ex player coming to sit next to me at half time to tell me what I have just watched in the first half. They are not needed. To answer your other question. Yes I watched some games (only a few) of the World Cup on TV. Only because I had nothing better to do.

Yes we can have high profile games such as the FA Cup Final and England internationals live on TV but that is it. Not every fucking game. It is not good for football. We used to pride ourselves that we had the best refs in the world. Then TV came along and every decision made by a ref was scrutinised. Refs have a split second to make their decisions. Pundits take ages and look at situations from different angles before coming to a decision. I don't think refs are any worse now than they were years ago.

If there were no TV in the grounds there would be a knock on effect in that clubs would have to operate with less income. This would lead to the obscene salaries being paid to players becoming less so. In the long term I think Football would benefit by becoming a level playing field with 20 clubs in with a chance of being champions instead of 4.

Are you happy for highlight shows such as MOTD to still exist, or would you have them gone as well?

Yes I would. :yahoo:

I voted for dodgy TV but whats happening will prove to be the begining of the end for the Premiere league as is.

Sky currently charge circa ?1000+ / month to pubs for football, this ruling will put pay to that. Next time the rights are up for auction the PL will recieve alot less for the rights and this will trickle down to the clubs. Teams will have to start pulling the wage bills in in preperation for the reduced incomes or they will go to the wall!

I don't see that as a bad thing at all. I think some Billionaire owners might get the hump though :D

It wont effect the big boys but it will for teams like us who rely heavily on PL TV revenues more than others, the trick will be to cut back the wage bill at the right time, if you go to early then you risk not getting the decent players and going down but if you go to late then you risk going into more and more debt.

have you been to the bottom end of halliwell rd / backburn rd, or derby st / st helens rd recently.

it's not racist it's a fact.....no pubs.

Whereas George just liked a brass at half time. :o [allegedly]

I wont shed any tears when it brings down the ridiculously high wages that players earn.

At the moment we get about 40m in through t'gogglebox and 7m through the gate. The current set up, albeit unfair on lower league clubs, allows teams like ourselves with piss poor attendances to compete with larger clubs. If the sky deal collapsed it would leave clubs like manu to negotiate their own revenues and we would be left scratting around like fookin chickens unable to compete.

So imo the current set up at least maintains some kind of status quo, the downside being that as long as the finances dwarf the money through the gate, TV is king.

So, are we allowed to post links to streams now?
