At Corners....

............why do we not leave a man upfront so that when / if we clear it we have somebody to clear it to. Surely not doing this is inviting pressure!

We've done this for a while now. Megson used to do it but gor slated for his tactics.

oc says that we are defending, so we defend

By that logic we should leave 5 up

Agreed. Attack is only the best form of defence if you have the ball!

why 5 by that logic. leaving one man up would put their defence under pressure

We should leave at least 2 up, if we leave 2 up then Fulham are gonna leave 2 or 3 back to mark 'em.

It adds a counter option to our play, we countered well today, sometimes we should do things like the corners to give us more variety and outlets.

Coyle's answered this before, as did Megson before him.

IIRC, the more space there is in the box the more likely we are to concede, because there's more space for attackers to run into/the ball to drop.

As opposed to how the liklihood of Lee getting the ball on the half way line, beating three men on his own, and then scoring.

Number of corners we've conceded from in the last few years vs Number of stunning break-away goals we scored from corners before then?

Its not just for a breakaway goal though. Leaving a man up would put pressure on the oppositon player when it gets cleared rather than give them time to get ball back into our box.

i can see pro's and con's to both

Considering coyles footballing mentality, if there was any benefit or proof leaving a man out would lead to goals, hed do it.

Aye, it was one of the questions at the first manager/ fans forums.

Not too bothered about the way we defend corners though, it's the fact that we don't score any that pisses me off. The ball goes to the far post too often, we really need to attack the near post more.

It used to drive me mad under Meggo but under Coyles its reet :pardon:

It's not like we never concede from corners with 11 players back, we have a couple of times this season, Blackpool at home and Wolves away for example.

I understand the point of leaving too much space in the box, if you remove players, but instead of the small light players like Lee on the post, I'd rather have him and say Petrov upfront, if we have 11 players back, our only outlet is put it out for a throw-in or another corner, or kick it down the pitch and then defend from there.

We have tall and strong players to deal with balls, we have pacey tricky players to do some damage if we manage to find them after a clearence/pass out.

Today against Fulham, they had a lot of corners, a few of 'em ended up with like a ping pong situation in the box, with so many players in the area, there's more chance of confusion IMO, if we leave players up, then the opposition will put defenders back, unless they like conceding. I'd have Lee and Petrov/left winger up, with Holden or M.Davies on the edge of our box, they have the distribution skills to find our wingers, and our wingers have it in 'em to rather gain yardage, or pass back and quickly spin round for a through ball with their advantage of acceleration over the defenders.

There's 3 reasons for that

1) Megson is a cunt, Coyle isn't

2) Under Coyle, we hack away corners when needed, but often break with passing from them so the pressure is taken off and a man higher up the pitch isn't always required to retain possession. Under Megson the policy was lump it to nobody so that it simply came back at us

3) See reason 1)

And for the record, I'm really not a fan of it under whomever is in charge

Problem is, when Matty Taylor or Petrov or anyone else who takes corners they fail to beat the first defender, such is the fine line between hitting the defender or hitting SKD's head for a flick on.

And don't the crowd love it whan Taylor allows a corner to be headed clear by the first defender!
