  • To be fair I can sort of see his point, I don't see that BWFC would be an especially interesting game for the home fans, unless of course Holden is playing, or if we happen to be the reighing FA Cup c

  • Maybe they should get PNE instead as they won the league plenty times. Houston Dynamo, founded in 2005. I've got socks older than them. There's only one team in Texas! JR knows the score.

He'd get booked for running into the stands over here.

Technically, he wasn't in the stands. He jumped over the ads and climbed a little wall, but he didn't go into the stands. Does that matter?

Yup leaning over the advertising hoarding hugging someone in the crowd would get you booked by our numpty refs.

Didn't Iniesta get booked for that message on his shirt at the WC Final? And after how the Dutch played as well. Refs really can be little facists when they want to be.

As for Holden, he seems like an amazing guy and it's a joy to have him at BWFC.

Thought exactly the same.

I've got a soft spot for all things American except the crazy republicans who make the Tories look like tree hugging hippies

Exactly, me too. And Texas is unfortunately the worst. (Don't start that discussion with PSBU, though.)

By the way, the Holden family is fantastic. When Stu's dad was alive they would host tailgate parties in the parking lot after games, and Stu would always show up eventually. Everyone was invited, and there was always good food and lots of laughs. Even when Mr. Holden was in and out of the hospital, the parties and fellowship continued. Really nice people. His mom still made it to the games last year.

No wonder Houston Dynamo has took off!

Brahma, your doing well giving your Club a good name. Keep it up pal. Hopefully there'll be a prosperous history between you and BWFC.

p.s. Your new stadium reminds me of Kryten from Red Dwarf.

You mean that there's no halftime entertainment featuring the Bolton Belles?

Here's some Houston Dynamo half time eye candy for you.

Time for Stuie Story Number 2, or as I said, most people know it as "Why Bolton Wanderers Can Thank Brahmafutbol for Having Stuart Holden on Their Team."

November 2009 the Dynamo played a semifinal game against the Galaxy in Los Angeles. They were one win away from playing for their third championship in their first four years. I already had my ticket for the finals in Seattle and managed to make the 1500 mile trip to LA thanks to a Dynamo friend that works for an airline. There were a lot of Dynamo fans that made the trip, and we were expecting to get the win. We knew it would be tough, though, since everyone knew the league wanted to see LA in the finals, being the team of Donovan and Beckham, the team of the best stadium in the league and the team with the celebrity fans.

The game was dominated by the Dynamo. Strangely, though, every time the Dynamo really began to press the home team, the stadium lights would go out. That happened twice, creating a delay that totaled over an hour. Conspiracy theorists would have a field day. Both teams fought to stay warm during the delays but it allowed LA time to regroup each time. For most of regulation the game remained goalless, but right at the end the Dynamo netted a goal to go up 1-0. Or at least they thought they had. For reasons no one can explain to this day, the goal was disallowed on a Dynamo foul. Watching replays all one can see is LA fouling the Dynamo in the box, not the other way. Eventually, LA won the game on two goals in overtime and went on to lose in the finals.

The next morning, I dropped my rent car off at the agency and took the long bus ride to the airport. On the bus was a well-dressed man who spoke with a British accent. Noticing my Dynamo jersey, he asked what I thought of the game. He then steered the conversation to what I thought of Holden. I told him he was a Houston favorite and told him Stuie Story Number 1 and several others. I told him that I had heard he wanted to play in Europe but Dynamo fans were praying he would change his mind. He told me that he was really impressed with his play that night. He then asked if I followed English football and I said I watched it on tv but didn't have a favorite team or follow specific players. He told me that he represented an English team but that he couldn't tell me which one it was. As he got off the bus, he looked me straight in the eyes and said "mark my words, within two months Holden will be playing for my team."

I didn't like the thought of Stu leaving Houston and his words bothered me, though at the time we sort of thought it was inevitable. When I got home, I told my friends about the conversation and we waited to see if his prophecy would come true. When it was announced that Stuart would go to England on trial, I wondered if it was for that man's team or not. I really had no idea if he was serious. Eventually I sort of put it out of my mind.

Then last month I noticed a NY Times story about Holden http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/04/sports/soccer/04holden.html?_r=1 and it made me sit up and think that man was Owen Coyle. This part in particular convinced me it was him:

Holden returned to the United States to rebuild his career with the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer, making 103 appearances from 2006 to 2009. It was there that he caught the eye of Coyle, who was watching a playoff game and noticed a young player with a shock of blond hair darting about the field.

?Everywhere the ball was, Stuart seemed to be,? Coyle said. ?There was this unbelievable energy.?

So you see, when Holden leads Bolton to victory over Manchester this weekend, BWFC fans have Brahmafutbol to thank for getting him there. Bad news for Dynamo fans, but great for Bolton. In appreciation, Bolton fans are encouraged to come to Houston this summer and take him out to eat.

And that is the end of my Stuie Stories. Thanks for reading.

By the way, one correction. In the NY Times story I quoted it makes it seem that Holden came back to Houston to become a Dynamo. That's not the case. He was injured in England in a mugging (a literal one, not on the field) and came back to Houston to recover from some serious injuries. While he was in Houston the Dynamo relocated (and were reincarnated) from San Jose, CA. His agent gave the team a call before they had even begun their first season. He began as a reserve player but was gradually developed into a starter, thanks in large part to the patience of the Dynamo and their head coach Dominic Kinnear. It was all a lucky coincidence that a home town guy became a Dynamo star.

The loss of the Dynamo to the Hollywood Beckhams that fateful day in November 2009 was most certainly not because of the superior quality of play of the Galaxy. There definitely was a conspiracy to give Beckham a chance at the 2009 MLS cup. The proof is here:
