anewman Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 we have had an appalling end to the season pure relegation form, so what went wrong? for me Holdens injury and dropping wheater for 50p head
Traf Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 I think it has just become more apparent that Coyle is very similar to Allardyce & Megson, in that there seems to be little evidence of a Plan B to his chosen style of play.
frankietheman Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Injuries to key players, paper thin squad and lack of alternative plan to "Light Brigade" tactics mean that other managers can suss easily where our frailties are.
birch-chorley Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Losing our 2 best players Holden and Mark Davies, We lost our bite in midfield that exposed our defence and starved our attack. OC knows that he needs to get more good quality players in to make sure we have cover / competition for places next season and this summer will give him his first real opportunity to do a good bit of business inbound and outbound.
Traf Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 (edited) 2 "strikers" contributing 2 goals between them in the last 16 league games? Edited May 16, 2011 by Traf
tylswhite Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 2 "strikers" contributing 2 goals between them in the last 16 league games? That is fucking ridiculous and a massive reason our season turned for the worse imo.
The True Marple White Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 I agree with Holden, however I think it was Robinson getting the booking before the semi that did it, swiftly followed by Wheater doing the same. This completely took the balance away to protect ourselves for the Semi Final, which didn't work
frank_spencer Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 That is fucking ridiculous and a massive reason our season turned for the worse imo. TBF to Elmander he's not played as a striker since Sturridge came in.
darwen_white Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 I think it's a combination of us having a small squad, (being unable to rotate as much as other teams) and a problem with key players minds being elsewhere, with them knowing that they're going on to pastures new in the summer. I don't think there's much OC can do about this. All in all, a good season IMO
Guest Frandsen08 Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 could of been worse we could of signed vela, and we really would of been up shit creek!
darwen_white Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 could of been worse we could of signed vela, and we really would of been up shit creek! Or we could've NOT signed Sturridge
paulhanley Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 we have had an appalling end to the season pure relegation form, so what went wrong? for me Holdens injury and dropping wheater for 50p head Stuart Holden is the complete midfielder and if he comes back as good as he was before injury I think he's going to end up in the Djorkaeff/Okocha/Campo legend category. His presence enables us to play a two man midfield and get away with it. Without him we can't do it - with the knock on effect of exposing the back four. In short, Jonny Evans recklessness was the turning point in our season.
tylswhite Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 TBF to Elmander he's not played as a striker since Sturridge came in. Even so hes played in a role where he should chip in with goals but he hasnt done.

frank_spencer Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Even so hes played in a role where he should chip in with goals but he hasnt done. how many goals has holden scored playing in that position all season? A massive 2
Moderators Casino Posted May 16, 2011 Moderators Posted May 16, 2011 and the sum total of petrov, lee, taylor and rodrigos goals can probably be counted on one blackburn hand
tylswhite Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 how many goals has holden scored playing in that position all season? A massive 2 Holden hasnt played right wing has he? Elmander has played more right wing than in centre midfield. More to the point a so called "striker" is supposed to have an eye for goal which was the point i was trying to make.
Moderators Zico Posted May 17, 2011 Moderators Posted May 17, 2011 Holden hasnt played right wing has he? Elmander has played more right wing than in centre midfield. LodgeMorrWhite Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Our away form. In the end its caught up with us. The Holden injury was clearly another major blow but the failure to address the away form in the second half of the season has cost us.

jules_darby Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Since the beginning of the season when we were winning, a few of us recognised and said (I think Casino and Zico amongst others) that playing 4-4-2 the way we did would result in our midfield and fullbacks being knackered and picking up injuries - I remember particularly stating it post our win at Upton Park and I believe this is what's happened - we've stretched certain players and played beyond ourselves on occasions, leading to us struggling now... Obviously the loss of Holden contributes greatly towards this
MalcolmW Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 2 of the away cup wins were against virtual reserve teams.
tylswhite Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 he does, hence he was top scorer (and still is) when he was playing up top should never have been played on the right or in centre mid anyway, Davies should've made way If he had a natural eye for goal he would of picked up a couple of goals even playing in midfield imo. I agree about the Davies comment though, picking Davies not stop has to change as it doesnt do him or us any good imo.
M G WHITES Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 (edited) Dropping a in form centre half for one who had been out for 4 months Edited May 18, 2011 by M G WHITES
Members DazBob Posted May 18, 2011 Members Posted May 18, 2011 Dropping a in form centre half for one who had been out for 4 months Still baffles me. Wheater had been nothing short of excellent since he came. Despite being a couple of inches shorter, he's still better in the air. Most importantly though, he doesn't fuck about with it. He's a proper centre-half. I can only (hopefully) assume he knows Cahill is going and wanted to keep Knight sweet, knowing that Knight and Wheater will be our pairing for next season.
