Let's have another analogy, whilst we're having such fun.

I sometimes watch Mastermind

Contestants invariably get some answers wrong.

I don't always know the correct answer either, but I quite often know they've got it wrong.

If you where answering the questions and you didnt know the answer would you hazzard a guess or answer nothing?

I am sure OC did know what he needed / wanted but was unable to finance them. I like many believed the free transfers (pratley / NRC) where decent in the summer. Matty Taylor for 12 months or Mears / Eagles for 3 years, Could have gone either way. We wont know until we see Mears.

It doesn't matter where you go shopping if you don't know what to do with the goods when you get them home!

In one Marc but I'm not sure if that supports Coyle staying or not!

Problem being, if Coyle doesn't know - then who does? As we haven't the funds to back a new manager on his shopping trip even if that's at Poundland again.

just to put an idea out there...

Which manager has the safer job ?

The one that spends millions and gets a mid table result but makes the club debt worse..

The one that just about keeps us in the premiership by spending no money and reducing the clubs debts.

Megson had money when he came in, and its beggars belief that a Premiership team didnt have a penny in the coffers to buy a player..

If I were a club manager in a League where managers are disposable I know i would be trying to make my job more secure..

Just a thought...

The problem is Coyle has bought Bargain basement players, and most seem to be just that.. Is Pratley any better than Tamir Cohen ... Is Eagles any Better than Matt Taylor (I know wrong side). ??

and why did we let Samuel ( with loads of premiership experience for low wages ) go, with no backup in plan?? I can understand selling both Taylor and Habsi, but why did we turn into a club selling off every sellable asset overnight ?

Basic of ?25K a week JLS

Thought he was worth the same again, so he was allowed to leave at the end of his contract.

He's now begging Championship teams to give him a chance for a fraction of that with appearance and performance top-ups...sounds like the kind of agreement Doncaster are offering!

Worth a punt?

Seriously though, can he be any worse than Robbo or Alonso?

I don't seem to remember him particularly having a bad run of form when he was here. It just seemed that all of a sudden his face didn't fit. Did something happen behind the scenes? :pardon:

i don't think samuel was on low wages

but regardless

coyle was intent on building his team

he's done that

The players who have left, have done so because the club wanted them off the wage bill, not because Coyle 'was intent on building his team'. He's been given bugger all to spend, so it might be 'his team' but i doubt that the players he's signed would have been top of his list if he'd been given the sort of money Megson got.

See that's a fair point, but could we have spent better with the limited budget he did have? We'd have to say yes right now

And part 2 is using what he has effectively which must be in question

Every manager makes mistakes in the transfer market. Wenger spent the best part of ?10M on Mertesacker and he doesn't look much better than Wheater at the moment. If you're given bugger all to spend, then it's more of a risk that the players you sign are not going to make the grade. Give Owen Coyle ?20M and he buys Sturridge who guarantees you goals. Give him ?4M and you get N'Gog, who is a decent player but hardly a goal machine.

I think Ngog is arguably the best business we did in the window; he's certainly Premiership quality for me

He's a decent player. I meant that he's not really an out-and-out goalscorer. When you're shopping for bargains, the chances of ending up with someone like Stuart Holden are less likely than getting someone like Eagles or Pratley, for example. It seems to me that part of the criticism directed towards Coyle, is that he hasn't won the lottery every time he plays, but then which manager does?

My main criticisms of Coyle is that he doesn't to be able to get the best out of the players, and that he's brought players in that either aren't as good as what we have already or aren't good enough to get in the team.

Sounds about right to me :good:

And me.

for years moyes had limited budget at everton, when he had cash though he generally spent it on 1 or 2 players a window to improve his starting 11 even if he meant playing with a smaller squad (topped up with younger players if injuries kicked in) rather than purchasing 7 a window just to get to 25 players with only 1 or so being good enough for your best 11.

Moyes has spent about ?25M more than they've received in fees. It may not be a fortune, but it's more than we've given to any manager we've had recently.

reet

i think we're veeering massivley off track here

whether the players are good enough or not, my view, and that of one or two others, is that he isn't getting the best out of them and we (he) repeat(s) our (his) mistakes, week in, week out

do you think he is showing signs of grasping this?

Over the nine years he's been in charge. I doubt we've ever had a transfer surplus of anything remotely like ?25M.

So, that averages out to a net spend of ?2.8m per season. None of our managers have ?2.8m net to spend?
