Ben Der Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Wilko Best player to have every graced the game of rugby? awesome talent IMO shame about all the injuries he would have set records that would have never been caught
Site Supporter superjohnmcginlay Posted December 13, 2011 Site Supporter Posted December 13, 2011 for this reason alone, a great player
Members DazBob Posted December 13, 2011 Members Posted December 13, 2011 One of the best kickers, yes. One of the best rugby players, not imo. Still, and quite rightly so, will always be an England legend.

Don't see why the two are mutually exclusive Given his international points record, particularly bearing in mind his injuries, I think he has to be considered one of the greats Ask any French player of the fear when they saw him on the team sheet
Members DazBob Posted December 13, 2011 Members Posted December 13, 2011 Don't see why the two are mutually exclusive. I guess they don't have to be. Just, again only imo, when I think of great players I think of the likes of Jonathan Davies, David Campese, Jonah Lomu etc. Kickers are a bit of a much of a muchness.

Aye but Jonny is a number 10, he's a playmaker and kicker and very good at it whereas Campese and Lomu whilst groundbreaking, were wingers and therefore finishers so you'll remember their tries Jonathan Davies isn't fit to lace Wilkinsons's boots at fly half
athywhite1958 Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-OhYAtK6to I'll never forget rhat day mate, we wee in Walkden Whites HQ (Labour Club)watching it before we set off to Middlesborough, our coach broke down just outside of Boro, and to make matters worese the police got us to the game

We'd been jumped the night before outside Fridays in Northenden, turned into a mass brawl and a couple of us got bottled. Wythenshawe scrotes took offence to some slappers giving us more attention than them Happy days
Widnes Two Hats Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Aye, fair do's. Are you admitting you saturate the board with bollocks?
jules_darby Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 thought we played leeds away that day? I'm 100pc sure it was We were singing "swing low" to viduka
Members bolty58 Posted December 13, 2011 Members Posted December 13, 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-OhYAtK6to The ball came straight at me and landed about 4 rows in front of me. One of the fondest memories of my life. Singing 'Two world wars and two world cups, tra-la-la-la-la' walking away from the stadium. Not long after that, 3 Poms who had travelled over from Perth request 3 bottles of Veuve Cliquot at the Lions Den bar. "How many glasses do you need with them?" "We don't need glasses luv". A truly wonderful day (and few weeks) in my life.
Members DazBob Posted December 14, 2011 Members Posted December 14, 2011 Are you admitting you saturate the board with bollocks? If, by saturate, you mean post a lot then yes. However, I'm honest enough to admit if I've been one-eyed and incorrect. Many others aren't.
athywhite1958 Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 thought we played leeds away that day? I was pretty sure it was Boro away, we didn't often go to WW HQ early doors unless we were travelling, I do stand to be corected
Smiffs Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 How can a bloke who's only passed a rugby ball 4 times in his whole career be the worlds best? Amd it's was defiantly Leeds away. Went with ani.
Smiffs Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Jonathan Davies isn't fit to lace Wilkinsons's boots at fly half You got that the wrong way round. One of the best players I've ever seen. Davies played proper rugby too and didn't pick up half the girly injuries wilkinson got.
Traf Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 If being the best kicker makes him a rugby legend and one of the world's best ever peanut huggers, then that proves how shit a game Union really is.
tylswhite Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 If being the best kicker makes him a rugby legend and one of the world's best ever peanut huggers, then that proves how shit a game Union really is. Boom.

Only because Union wasn't paying at the time; if it was he'd never have switched My owd man is a Chemics (or is it Vikings these days?) fan so I saw Davies a few times for them in the late 80's or early 90's and IMO Wilkinson is a better overall player Wilkinson isn't just an kicker though, he passed it well and was a tremendous tackler for his size. Oh and he aint Welsh

Oh and he aint Welsh Wilkinson was a good player but David Beckham could have done 80% of what he used to do. An all round world class rugby player he's not. He's not even playing the same game as the likes of Lynagh or Ella. Davies switched codes (irrelevant why) and had to adapt to a game where playing fly half (stand off) involves taking on the fat lads now and again instead of screaming like a girl and kicking it. Both had natural ability but Davies was the complete player, one of the best I've ever seen in either code - he could just do everything. Wilkinsons dined out on his boot for years. World class kicker, I'd agree, not bad with the rest of his game but nowhere near an 'all round' world class player.
Pablo Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 He is as much the Best England Rugby player ever, as David Beckham is the best English footballer ever.

We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one; I actually think that Wilkinson has been unfairly viewed as just a kicker because he was so good at it. you're not made England's 2nd youngest ever debutant just because you can kick it a bit I would concede that without his kicking he'd not be seen as world class, but his other attributes are also well into the international class and kicking is so important to a number 10 in Union that you can't take that attribute away from him just because you don't like Union's kicking nature
