ex_midlandwhite
Garp My question on this is why are betfair liable? They don't usually actually lay bets themselves right (multiples aside). Surely it is punters who lay the bet but can't see why anyone would have especially given I understand the horse was almost home at the time. Moderators Carlos Posted December 29, 2011 Moderators Share Posted December 29, 2011 Yep, on a 32 bit computer, it's the largest signed number you can hold. Once you add 1 to it it will wrap round. Schoolboy error.
ex_midlandwhite
Betfair are liable because they voided the market. The whole point of an exchange is that there are no palpable errors. Ive lost thousands on human inputting errors ive made over the years, I intended on laying the favourite in the final of Britains got talent once at 1.35. I missed the decimal point out and submitted a lay at 135 so it laid everythign on the lay side upto that price, it cleaned out my betfair bank. Obviosuly it won and I had to stand the loss as errors happen and once the bet is struck its struck......theres thousands of people out there with similar stories for much bigger maounts. One guy laid a horse a few years ago at 1000 for ?119 by mistake, he lost 119k. With regards to 'the horse was almost over the line' thats a lie by betfair, it was available to back 2 furlongs into the race until the end of the race, were talking a couple of minutes, but thats irrelevent, it doesnt matter if it was the only horse left in the race, with half a yard to go and the price was 1000, once the bets struck it stands. Ah I see, had missed that it was punter error and presumably the punter will argue Betfair systems should not have allowed it to happen! That's one bad day for the punter if not!!! Moderators Carlos Posted December 29, 2011 Moderators Share Posted December 29, 2011 I'm guessing the figure involved was 2147483648 (or anything over 2147483647) which would wrap round and be a negative number (using Two's Complement), you then compare if the balance is greater than that and as it's now a negative number then that passes. Traf
If betfair accepted the bet in error, they should stand the losses IMO. So, if a drunk enters a betting shop and accidentally puts his money on the wrong horse and the one he intended to back wins: they won't void the bet and pay him his money back. PS I'm slightly biased, because I had ?2k on at that 29 odds!

Moderators Carlos Posted December 29, 2011 Moderators Share Posted December 29, 2011 but no one has tried it in 12 years of betfair! and any other gambling site with the same progamming has the same problem, it just hasnt been tried...... amazing I'd guess it's a new interface they've provided for mobiles or something, I'm sure most software will handle this. Handling large numbers is first year programming stuff.

Site Supporter MickyD Posted January 1, 2012 Site Supporter Share Posted January 1, 2012 So, who stood to lose money here? The guy who was allowed to lay but without funds or betfair?
Traf
?? On the other thread you said you had seen it, but not managed to get a bet on. I didn't get the bet on, because it voided it almost immediately. So I'd class that as backing it, but not getting it on.
