We had a cracking game this weekend, against an A section team. We are b Section.

Anyway, team we played Saturday, full of decent players, all have been on to Sat schools etc, but their whole game plan was their keeper, (who was quality btw) to hit it as far as he could,to the 2 big strikers.

Our team roll it out from the keeper, and play in from that point, and we wont change it, as we feel its important to have the ball as much as possible.

Now once we went 4 nil down, some parents were encouraging our keeper to start hitting it long....the first time he did it, some parents and even the ref said "good kick keeper" .....we lost the ball after that, so why was it a good kick !?!

After having a quick word with our keeper and defender, I made sure he did NOT listen to mums n dads, and do what HE feels he should do, and take his time, 10 mins later its 4-3 and the other team is starting to panic.

Point being, im not sure we have it THAT wrong at kids level at all in this country, its the attitude of the 'others' that are around football, who seems stuck in the past.

Baring in mind, some of these parents have talked to me about English football being wrong, and we don't pass it enough.....these same people wanting it hit long.....at 7 year old.

Good post.

When I was 11/12 years old I used to take people on where ever I was on the pitch or try and keep hold of possession with short passes.

Clearly it was not always a good policy as we sometimes lost possession as a result, but, I wanted to play football.

The team manager stopped playing me in favour of a bigger lad who could kick it upfield a long way.

That is why we are so far behind other countries.

That is the problem, winning at all cost attitude, but were is it coming from now !?!

Some people turn to this attitude when losing, some do it when parents complain, sometimes its people who run clubs, that pressure the managers to play certain ways.

Its not clear were it comes from, but what is crystal clear, is all of the above are on complete different pages.

We tel EVERYONE involved in our Team, what we are doing and why we do it.

That's our way, and we wont change. We will lose games, and we will win some, but hopefully we will have players that enjoy the ball, and in time, will all play it correctly.

2 good posts pabbers.

Seems your ethics are good within your team and parents are told when to shut up!

As regards to parents, it is a common fact that Pre academy parents express they are not bothered about elite football, academy parents are pro academy, post academy parents ie released son often (not always) but often slag the academy off.

It's human nature and is very difficult within youth football.

I heard that Bolton have converted only one or two from their Academy to Scholarships this time round or am I misinformed? Also heard they are disingenuous round other clubs in favour of their young players, but as Gumbo rightly said peoples opinions are going to be hugely biased by their own experiences. As long as the kids are enjoying it and not put under too much pressure is the main thing.

At last, some common sense.

Let the kids enjoy it, they shouldn't be coached at all whilst at junior school.

kids should be allowed to enjoy their football first and foremost.

After all it (social) is part of the FA's 4 corner model.

Certainly at grass roots a huge percentage of the balance should be based within this model.

At elite level more emphasis is put on technical and basic physical development but we certainly also currently do work inside the social corner.

Elite level at a young age is getting younger and younger. Ten years ago elite performance started at eleven.

more recently, due to the big clubs having the resources and budget, players are invited into elite development centres from the age of 6

Curently many other clubs have followed the model to entice young players into their club (their local club) so that player doesn't go to a 'big' club.

The EPPP is a new model that is changing the way clubs run at elite youth level.

Bolton Wanderers decided to buy fully into youth development as part of Sam's ten year plan, this is why we are only now starting to believe that players the club have invested in from a young age are starting to come through, e.g. Josh and Joe. There is an excitement at the club because we are starting to produce players that have come through the whole youth system therefore choosing Bolton at a young age where as previously that player could have chosen a club with a bigger youth system including Blackburn.

So does bringing player to the club at a young age work? it has to so Bolton compete with other local clubs!

Should a huge emphasis be on socialising and enjoyment? of course!

Both can be possible you know !

Can't just let them run wild and do what they want for 4 years, then start coaching at 12 years old!!!

i've got to say you sound like you've got a great attitude to it all

but :)

why can't you just start coaching at 12

its supposed to be a laugh

see, your role is to let the kids have fun, not to produce players to win the world cup

isn't it?

Course it is, and that is what we do, but we see no harm in throwing some coaching in too..

The kids will dictate what they want to an extent. We have 7 or 8 players, that play so serious, and just love the game and ask us football things, but we have 7 or 8 that turn up for a laugh, like a 'Youth Club'.

Nothing wrong with any of theses attitude's at all, So we try and mix it up, so both sets enjoy it, and get what they want.

Example, we play 'tig' but you have to run with the ball to 'tig' someone.

Fun AND Coaching !

Kids LOVE it !

Spacial awarenee, balance, touch and control can be taught to children in a fun way, most of the time they are taught through play and dont realise the skills they are developing. Its not all about your formation, how many you leave up for corners or how far the goalie can hoof it. I agree that footbal in spome respects is self teaching but its not that a decent coach cant improve a childs ability.

It's all the parents fault !!
