DazBob Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Schedule I reckon more people over here pronounce it as it as "sc" rather than "sh" nowadays. Doesn't make it right though. Quote

Another one, not sure if it's an Americanism or not though, is "maintenance" being pronounced "mantAINance". ... but of course, those of us who see values in knowing how to read, write and speak properly are just being 'picky'. Broken Britain. Quote
Youri McAnespie Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 This isn't a 'saying' and is old ground on here - yet some people persist with... 'Loose' for lose, i.e. "We'll probably loose to Sunderland but I'm not bothered..." To the culprits, read it back to yourselves for fucks sake. Did The Happy Mondays sing about wearing a 'Lose fit'? Are those harridan scoldwitches on the telly at dinnertimes the 'Lose Women'? Is a mentalist sometimes referred to as having 'a screw lose'? Quote
DazBob Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Is a mentalist sometimes referred to as having 'a screw lose'? If the screw's very lose, then he might loose it. Quote

I only started to notice this in the last 10 years or so. Its so wrong! Quote
frankietheman Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 ControVERSY - emphasising the second syllable of the word instead of the first. The word is CONtroversy - we are English not fucking frogs! Guaranteed to make me foam at the mouth and rip the head off every european I come across that one! Also southerners who can't pronounce "R" s in words - "bought" instead of "brought" and this habit of pronouncing "schuge" for "huge". I could go on but need to lie down , wrap my head in a wet towel and chew a pillow. Quote
no balls Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 (edited) I think we need a new thread: Irritating "Americanisms" & American - English prounciation. That'll get Didles posting again I once had a colleague in the US ask me to stop spelling colour incorrectly. She was told to fuck off. Edited January 15, 2013 by no balls Quote

Because of my chosen profession, Aluminum is a prime example. Speilchucker keeps pulling me up for 'S's instead of 'Z's. Grrrrr Quote
