Hutch Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Was raised by Mounts on another thread but I thought it was worthy of its own debate I know in the past it never snowed and we always had 50 thou at Burnden and the bogs always smelled of fanny but have we ever had a better youth following in the last 25 years as we have now? I think the progress our club has made in the last 7 years or so with their cheap ticketing policy is now paying real dividends. We do have the next generation, we have fcukin loads of youth and I'm finding their passion and energy infectious Some of our followings, especially Sheff and Barnsley, have been great. I expect Charlton and Bristol to be the same I cant remember a younger following in the ast 25 years. Remember in the mid 80's when we went to Rotherham, it was the season before we went down to the 4th. There were fcukin loads of youth, I think we took about 3,500 that day and it was cool (as a youth at the time) to follow Bolton The police are running around now and hassling us, and yes we are getting a bit of a reputation with the flares and the like, but I really think our youth are adding something this season to our great club I don't see any of the clubs we have played this season or last having a bigger youth following Quote
bolty58 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Great reading that Hutch. Cheers mate - warms the cockles. Quote
Ratwhite Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Think ten years in the prem helped "groom" the yoof. Agree with your comment about the passion being infectious. Got a good mix of ages when we turn out for away days (behave like a twenty something for a day and feel like a fifty something day after) Quote
Sweep Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 yoof, yoof, yoof Are you not too old for yoof now Oli? Quote
Sweep Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Not sure. What is the criteria? Being young for one....that's you out Quote
Mounts Kipper Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 (edited) I posted this on the other thread so I have copied it here because its relevant. I'm made up our youth are coming through whenever I go to play at premier fives at Breighmet and I've been playing there 10 years there are definitely more young lads wearing Bolton shirts and as I don't live in Bolton that's my only chance to judge our younger sport outside match day, quite often at the match I stand in the corner just to get the vibe and feed of the youths passion and I must say the numbers of youth have not reduced with our relegation and fair play for that, lastly our away support had been really good and plenty of our young uns have helped, that so I do agree with you, however in the 50s 60s and 70s the sheer numbers of kids born and the fact that the majority went to football because there was nothing much else to do cannot be under estimated it was on a completely different scale to what it is today, that's no reflection on our youth, without them we would be in a sorry state they caring positivity and freshness to our great club many of our long term older posters have become morose, middle aged and damn right miserable, love the youth, love the passion and vitality and never ever lose it. Hutch Posted March 23, 2013 Author Posted March 23, 2013 Great post Mounts, so true about some of our support becoming miserable as we get older. It's as though we never were shit It probably was the mid 80's when the percentage of our followings were as young as they are today. Hopefully, we have got over the play station generation and lads will be socialising and drinking on a Saturday afternoon rather than in front of the TV When we are having a few cans on the train pre the match, I find them entertaining and interesting, they are keeping me young with their tales of modern life and it takes me back to when I had the same enthusiasm and excitement about our great club They're even impacting my dress sense now. The missus said to me the other week, why have you bought some purple jeans?... I'm just after a pair of Toms now and I will blend right in Quote
anewman Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Our yoof are the mutts nuts, know some belting young uns Them in the crazy corner just need a leader who will make them gather and stand Quote
radcliffe white Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Our yoof are the mutts nuts, know some belting young uns Them in the crazy corner just need a leader who will make them gather and stand always said that, on away games there just to pumped up and bring to much attention need an old head to guide them. Casino Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Or, they could just carry on enjoying their day out with their mates, having a few beers and a few laughs and making a load of noise in the ground Quote
paulhanley Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 This is a remarkable development when you consider we have English football's two leading clubs including one that parades itself as "the biggest club in the world", to our south, to our west an upstart Prem club, to our north a club that found a multi millionaire and won the league in the 90s (albeit now a joke) and about 40 miles away, Liverpool, supported by many Boltonians who went to school in the 80s. Bring it on, we need more of this. Be good to see the East lower corner and West lower full of yoof in future! Quote
Burndens Bogs Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Dunno about yoof, but that Friday night game in Hull in the 90's had the biggest collection of "lads" i've ever seen from us. Many had been drinking very heavily Quote
tomski Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 There is defo a big yoof feel at the mo, Barnsley there was loads. A lot of credit has been earned on the aways this season. Huddersfield was another stand out. Quote
Mounts Kipper Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 (edited) The early mid 80s when were on a serious decline crowds around 5000 the youth kept us going proud to say I was one, the youth move en masse to the Lever End because it was the best area to create an Atmosphere many games in that period I would say a 1/3rd or the crowd were youth stood on the Lever pend and I genuinely believe the passion shown on there played a part on bringing the club back up the leagues. The youth are the driving force of any club and the you guns today can play a very important role and I believe they are doing just that, keep it going and enjoy supporting our great club.
