A few examples which especially nark me, however, since you ask, most of which relate to social engineering: Labour's plan to tilt the electorate in its favour by mass immigration, generous benefit payments and the minimum wage Conservative encouragement of marriage in the form of things like tax breaks Conservative big society horseshit Health promotion campaigns based on faulty science Labour trying to get as many people into university as possible for no decent reason Smoking bans Charging for plastic bags Congestion charges A whole litany of green pish Licensing laws Thousands of victimless 'crimes' on the statutes The public sector is feeble and a large proportion of its tasks could be carried out better and cheaper to the user by the private sector Stupid fucking signs up on the roads giving helpful advice such as don't fall asleep at the wheel and pump your tyres up Daft instances like the job advert that the government ordered to be removed because it judged that its demand that candidates should be reliable was discriminatory Almost every public sector job advertised in The Guardian

Though you haven't done anything to explain how things would not have been better if none of the things on the list had happened, or said anything useful in opposition to my view about unnecessary government interference in routine day to day affairs. Perhaps I expected too much. It is extraordinary though that you claim to agree with Fukuyama yet approve of so much social engineering, which by definition is illiberal. Even more but different discrimination is still discrimination. You are proclaiming that slavery is freedom. Though of course even he has abandoned many of his ideas. Between 1997 and the last election Labour introduced nearly 4000 new criminal offences, hugely increased government involvement in many aspects of the life of the individual and tried its hardest to mug anyone who had succeeded under capitalism. All I did was pull you up on the claim that we'd all do better without a government in our daily lives; and at no point have you made any point to change my mind. No one is arguing that all government involvement is completely acceptable or right; but to say the basis of our social democracy is fundamentally flawed at this point in our social history, is, in my utterly humble opinion, wrong and history tends to be on my side on this one. You made the claim, it's up to you to prove it; not just post a list of things that you personally disagree with, I'm afraid. And finally, Rousseau's social contract is a historical document now, even his terminology is not the same as ours, but certain fundamentals are correct. I'd rather go with him and Locke, again a personal opinion.
