exiledwhite2
Interesting but what does it prove? Their u21s were light years better than ours, I guess Ozil and Khedira were lighting up the world cup less than 12 months later

Moderators Casino Posted July 11, 2014 Moderators Share Posted July 11, 2014 it doesnt prove anything, but youve got to admit its interesting not least that none of our lot have progressed much
Burndens Bogs
So only one of our under 21's made it into the 2014 World cup squad, yet 6 Germans from their under 21 side played against Brazil the other night. We're not moving in the right direction.
bgoefc
it doesnt prove anything, but youve got to admit its interesting not least that none of our lot have progressed much But have they ever? What i notice more than anything is that when players in the better national teams go back to play for their respective countries, it seems to mean far more to them and they slip into a group or team mentality. They slip effortlessly into a comfortable pattern of play and look far more like a team than England do. When these teams score a goal, their bench of subs celebrate as though they were on the field, whereas most of ours look bored and disinterested. I do not know what the answer is, perhaps we need to celebrate qualification as success in itself as nothing is going to change.
Moderators Zico Posted July 12, 2014 Moderators Share Posted July 12, 2014 To me it shows we've no strength In depth and bereft of any quality Presumably those german lads couldn't get in the full Germany squad at the time as they weren't deemed good enough or ready (had Mueller stepped up already?) Whereas we'll put anyone with a hint of talent straight into full squad, eg Rooney and walcott We've never had a decent u21 set up in terms of many if any of them really going on to make an impact at senior level
Moderators Carlos Posted July 12, 2014 Moderators Share Posted July 12, 2014 Was our team selected by Pearce? More of an indictment of him.
EyesRight
Any lad good enough at 18 is chucked in at the deep end without tournament experience at younger age groups. The successful countries don't do this, they try and win the younger tournaments with their best younger players and get a group playing together consistently. Moderators Carlos Posted July 12, 2014 Moderators Share Posted July 12, 2014 They got to the final Yep, look at the team, they are all physical players, big lads. Same as the biggest kids being picked at U11, once everyone else catches up they aren't so good.
Moderators Zico Posted July 12, 2014 Moderators Share Posted July 12, 2014 Was our team selected by Pearce? More of an indictment of him. Depends what the alternatives were, if that's the best if he had then not much he can do, don't think there's players he omitted who went on to senior squad, is there? Moderators Carlos Posted July 12, 2014 Moderators Share Posted July 12, 2014 I was thinking Our Gaz who is first choice CB for England by a considerable margin, didn't play much for the U21s, Lallana?
Leyther_Matt
Lallana has one U21 cap. Think Southampton might have even still been a League One side when he was eligible so might have been overlooked on the whole?

Cahill was 23 then fwiw and probably spent most of his eligible time loaned out in lower leagues, whilst lallana was 21 and league one Be interesting to know of that german team how many were top flight first team regulars by that point
Maggie Tate
Michael Owen says these things: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/germany/10962088/World-Cup-2014-Why-selfish-England-must-learn-from-selfless-Germany.html English football culture is selfish and there is an obsession with the individual 17-21 yr olds get no opportunity in the prem No team ethic That's my football post for the decade. L/H White
Difference is, cunts like Wilshere and the Ox think the U21's is below them. As soon as they get 1 senior cap, they forget and abandon the youth setup
SalfordOriginal
Difference is, cunts like Wilshere and the Ox think the U21's is below them. As soon as they get 1 senior cap, they forget and abandon the youth setup But they get managers/coaches like pearce/southgate telling them how to play when they have been coached by Wenger. All of a sudden it's no longer pass and move but having Phil Jones as your captain sat next to you in centre midfield Story on talksport midweek was about Bobby Robson, who never picked Glenn Hoddle because he wouldn't track back. That underlies what English football is trying to recover from (not just Robson by the way) Edited July 12, 2014 by SalfordOriginal
