paulhanley Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I suspect a lot of you would be similar to me in terms of having spent most of the 80s criticising the Warburton family role in the management of BWFC and a lot of the time subsequent not thinking particularly good things about them. They became the whipping boys for Bolton fans distraught at the decline of the club and a safe target for critics in any problematic moments when things had started looking up again. However its always been said that in the 80s they bailed the club out in when in financial strife by putting the players on their company payroll. It was also said that they'd recently paid the wages for a month. The Warbies are clearly still a very strong presence at BWFC. They don't seem to ever seek big headlines for their involvement. They are Bolton people who have spent the last two decades building a very successful business with an international reach that is operating at a very different level to the days when they had adverts at Burnden about baking "rather good bread" or whatever it was. Is it time for Warburton revisionism? Ought we now to look far more kindly on the steady involvement of this family in BWFC over the years, which is in stark contrast to what the Oyston family seem to be doing at Blackpool? Quote
Big E Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Successful Bolton folk = scum in Bolton folks eyes. Surely we all know this Quote

Rembrandt Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I always had the impression that most of the family are ManU, with exceptions being Whites. But what do I know. Quote

Blondi Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 The Warburton family are certainly worth a few quid, back in 2010 the BEN reported that they were worth close to £500 million! http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/8118365.Bread_magnates_now_worth___495m/ Quote

Take Hunt Off Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 I suppose in the great shceme of things you would be mad to invest money in a football club .The Warburtons could never be accused of that .Their business came first hence the succes. In the dark days of the eighties they could probably have helped the club a bit more (in supporters eyes) but they didn't & eventually (apart from Brett) bailed out.So it goes , I wander whether Eddie ever ruse the he got involved? gonzo Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Brilliant that, love hearing stuff like that wonder if Brett was a ox blood red DM boy, 6 or even 18 holes.???? Just asked my dad about it. He said George Warburton used to drop him off and tell my old man to look after him and make sure behaves whilst Brett would be quiet as a mouse. As soon a they were on the road he'd be at the back of the bus swearing like a trooper haha A few years before hand My dads wife at the time used to look after Brett and other siblings at their house. mannyroad58 Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Didn't make of yourself then Anywhere is an improvement on Halliwell Quote
MalcolmW Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 http://www.theguardian.com/business/2010/apr/08/fridayinterview-jonathan-warburton Good interview. Is Jonathan a white? I know Brett is. Jonathan is the boss and his focus is squarely on the business. Brett has always had BWFC at heart as well as working in the business. I doubt that investing significantly in the club will ever again be a serious option. If were going to happen it would have already done so. Quote
Farrelli Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 Hilary Devey is a wanderer. Apparently she scattered the Stretford end on her own and she was only going to buy a programme. Quote

paulhanley Posted May 6, 2015 Author Posted May 6, 2015 Malcolm, I'm sure you're right. The Warburtons aren't the types to be going for a big headline grabbing takeover and money splurge. They are hard headed business people - which is how they've been successful. However they've clearly a major and longstanding soft spot for BWFC and seem to provide a safety net when the going gets tough in any way. ....... I can't find it within me to be nasty about them in the same way I might have done in days gone by. Quote
EyesRight Posted May 6, 2015 Posted May 6, 2015 (edited) Plenty of Bolton folk with money. I think we should be looking at a Pataks, Appliances Online, Warbutons and Devey dream team. Maybe throw Khan in there if he ever gets to fight Mayweather. We are probably one of a few clubs in the division a buyer could make money on, given our infrastructure and IF we gain promotion in the next few years. Edited May 6, 2015 by EyesRight Quote
