Traf Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 Do any of you fine gentlemen do this for a living? If so, I'm looking to get my patio done. Granted, it's not the biggest job in the world at approx 30sq metres, but it could be worth someone's while. Quote
Breightmet Boy Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 I don't but I've still got a recent right jab. If your struggling give me the nod Traf. Quote
Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted July 4, 2015 Site Supporter Posted July 4, 2015 (edited) Took mine out this winter. Be sure you definitely want it- we did our own and we have done a couple of little ones for friends. They are high maintenance and quite expensive to keep in good nick. Just completed a re stain for some one and it was £132 for the stain alone. If its gets heavy use and a tough winter, which you have up your way, you'll need to re do it every year. I have found that the water based stains are not particularly long lasting. Once assembled, I found screws could not be removed if a board needed replacing, making the job more difficult. Joists are almost impossible to treat and ours lasted around 12 years before rotting through. The groved boards gather crap and need cleaning a lot to keep up appearances, especially if a lot of trees etc near by that drop leaves in autumn. On the plus side they have a softer feel than patios and look great when, new wouldn't have another one though. Colonel mustard once advertised in the business section. I built a large complicated one in 2008. Still looks good but I have to jet wash it every spring and it needs a good quality solvent based stain every 3 years. Still prefer it over flags though. Smiley Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 Think we are going for composite decking. Lower maintenance. Looks trendier. Downside is that it's far more expensive than wood though. Quote

Solvent ones are indeed better, but they're not as readily available and expensive. Used to have my chimenea on it too, once a few burning embers had scorched the wood it began to lose some of its charm Quote

Traf Posted July 4, 2015 Author Posted July 4, 2015 what's wrong with a patio? It's York stone, which gets as slippery as fuck when wet or icy. It's also not level and not exactly safe for my 18mth old grandson. Quote

Traf Posted July 4, 2015 Author Posted July 4, 2015 Personally, I'd rip the flags up, have it levelled and then put down some of that soft black floorcovering they use on playgrounds. Quote

jayjayoghani Posted July 5, 2015 Posted July 5, 2015 Perhaps pay extra for a deck that requires less maintenance. Larch for instance. Especially as only 30 sq metres https://russwood.co.uk/decking/scotlarch-decking Quote
Dr Faustus Posted June 12, 2020 Posted June 12, 2020 I'm looking to extend mine, but delivery is a nightmare at the moment... anyone know anywhere local with availability? Quote

Might seem like an obvious reply but I called in to Axfords this week and they seemed to be fairly well stocked. It wasn’t for decking though. Quote

Derek Fox? Foxtimber.co.uk They grow and produce their own stuff locally and are usually very good on price. Used them a lot in the past. Edited June 12, 2020 by Tonge moor green jacket Quote

Just had a look for comparison at their web pages, and fox's quite a bit cheaper on decking (longer board cheaper than Berry's shorter one). Interesting use of a Friday night 😂 Quote
