Do any of you fine gentlemen do this for a living?

If so, I'm looking to get my patio done.

Granted, it's not the biggest job in the world at approx 30sq metres, but it could be worth someone's while.

Took mine out this winter. Be sure you definitely want it- we did our own and we have done a couple of little ones for friends. They are high maintenance and quite expensive to keep in good nick. Just completed a re stain for some one and it was £132 for the stain alone. If its gets heavy use and a tough winter, which you have up your way, you'll need to re do it every year. I have found that the water based stains are not particularly long lasting. Once assembled, I found screws could not be removed if a board needed replacing, making the job more difficult. Joists are almost impossible to treat and ours lasted around 12 years before rotting through.

The groved boards gather crap and need cleaning a lot to keep up appearances, especially if a lot of trees etc near by that drop leaves in autumn.

On the plus side they have a softer feel than patios and look great when, new wouldn't have another one though.

Colonel mustard once advertised in the business section.

Spot on.

I built a large complicated one in 2008. Still looks good but I have to jet wash it every spring and it needs a good quality solvent based stain every 3 years. Still prefer it over flags though.

Solvent ones are indeed better, but they're not as readily available and expensive. Used to have my chimenea on it too, once a few burning embers had scorched the wood it began to lose some of its charm

what's wrong with a patio?

It's York stone, which gets as slippery as fuck when wet or icy.

It's also not level and not exactly safe for my 18mth old grandson.

...and if you wanted a patio you'd have a fucking patio.

Personally, I'd rip the flags up, have it levelled and then put down some of that soft black floorcovering they use on playgrounds.

Go to the farm at Smith hills and he's just chucked a load of well used tires into his food processor. Bargain!

I'm looking to extend mine, but delivery is a nightmare at the moment... anyone know anywhere local with availability?

Might seem like an obvious reply but I called in to Axfords this week and they seemed to be fairly well stocked. It wasn’t for decking though.

Derek Fox?

Foxtimber.co.uk

They grow and produce their own stuff locally and are usually very good on price.

Used them a lot in the past.
