Decathlon's stuff is very good for the price. Maybe have a look at Edinburgh Bike Cooperative in Manchester. Their Revolutiion bikes get good reviews. http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/browse/bicycles

Just had a look on there, this Specialized is a nice bike, but it's got V-brakes instead of discs -

I still reckon the Carrera  Blast at Halfords is a better bet

Sorry mate, I'd been out at a funeral all day was was on one a bit. No offence meant.

No worries and no offence taken.

Going having a look in halfords at the one Burnden Bogs recommends. I'm happy with that one I think.

Aren't the yoof back into BMX these days? In which case Partingtons of Bolton (now in a Manc postcode) will see you right. I bought a BMX from Halfords Christmas before last, not for me of course, but I wasn't impressed when I rode it to Santa's depot for delivery on Christmas Eve, a bearing fell out en route and it was clunky and heavier than the one I had twenty odd, nay, thirty years back...Cheap steel like someone else mentioned. Another plus for a (non-Halfords) BMX is a kid can maintain it themselves.

Thanks for the advice wwayers.

Opted for a btwin rock rider 500 from decathlon but in small men's size. The kids size one just seemed too small. Paid £189 for it.

Ended up buying 2 pair of boxing gloves and some pads too while they did their checks on it.

I doubt you will be able to hold the handle bars wearing them

A Grey one like this?

http://www.decathlon.co.uk/rockrider-500-mountain-bike-id_8293150.html

A young lad I know has one and it's a fairly capable bike for under £200, he never gets left behind when he comes out with us around Winter Hill & Rivvy and some of the fellas are on £2000 bikes.

Yeah that's the one.

Id say it was more black than grey tho. Sicken me. Hopefully be reet.

The boxing gloves might help him reach the handlebars if it's a bit big.

All the £2k bikes in the world won't fix that condition (being an old knacker) - that's why that young 'un has no problems keeping up on a two hundred quid one.

Ouch! To be fair I don't have a £2k bike, but I do admit to being an owd knacker!

The fella with the £2k bike is a 50 year old multiple triathlon/iron man competitor etc etc

Yet the 16 year old kid on the £200 Decathlon bike keeps with him all the way.

Triathlon bikes are fucking extortionate. i know a fella with one of these buggers.

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/cannondale/slice-ms-black-inc-2015-triathlon-bike-ec071026

That looks stealth - fookin expensive though.

As far as mountain bikes are concerned, for an adult bike you're better off sticking with the "name brands" they are more expensive for good reason - build quality and the quality of the frame & components.

For anyone thinking of purchasing a MTB  some of the best ones are (in no particular order)

Trek

Giant

Specialized

Cube

Scott

Cannondale

Kona

GT

Santa Cruz

Yeti

Canyon

Orange

I've probably missed out one or 2 like the underated Boardmans,Marins and a few others, but if you stick with any the above, either new or second hand you won't go far wrong and the resale value is always strong.

I'll be honest i've been shit at going out on it since the weather turned.

Same here, I've been out about twice in 5 weeks. It does my head in cos I like to get out 3 times a week minimum, otherwise I feel like Paul Potts.

I have a Specialized Rockhopper that has been out less than a dozen times, it is like new. My uncle was going to buy it for 100 quid but never showed up, think I might stick it on ebay as it is probably worth more than that.

Sell 'em? you'd easily get rid of them on the bay.

Think we'll keep em so we can go on rides when my boy is old enough.

I feel like a kid again when I go on a mountain bike. I'm 37 and can't help but trying to pull skids and bunny hop etc ha ha

I'd give you £100 for it if it's less than 5 years old.
