Had a CX bike for a while but couldn't get on with it, was great for bridleways/canals etc but wasn't much fun taking it down San Marino a couple of times.

What's your budget out of interest?

300 give or take. Then save for something better. If the frames orret I can change the rest around it

I'd just get a shitter and see if you take to it, something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Scott-cx-team-cyclocross-road-bike-ultegra-105-/161935600773?hash=item25b41d2c85:g:fTkAAOSwf-VWYXzJ (I wouldn't worry about the dent).

One thing to consider with CX bikes is that some suffer from toe overlap, might not be an issue for most people but I struggled with it.

You rode a CX down the San Marino?

Kinell, it's hard enough on a decent Full Suspension, i've seen plenty come a cropper riding down there even on decent Mountain bikes.

Clipped in too, did the Dog Kennel run a few times as well. Not the comfiest way to get down I must admit.

How tall are you? I've got a claud butler road bike that is my spare but I hardly use it. It would fit someone from 5' 6" to 6' I can let you have more details if you're interested.

Just under six three ( the near inch makes all the difference)

Biggest issue I have is my size and weight. Shops don't even stock upto my size
