My question is more 'What is the role of the board in the governance process around signings?'

At one end of the spectrum you've got the traditional 'There's your budget, crack on' at the other you have directors of football, transfer committee's etc. I'd guess we have adopted the traditional model.

We probably needed more hands on involvement in transfers from the board but that always doesn't go down well with managers or fans.

Also on the point of Dave Whelan raised by Zico above, didn't he fall out with Rioch over interference many years ago? He also appointed Coyle after the mess he made at our place and then compounded the error by appointing Mackay, but he appeared to be a bit senile by that point anyway. I don't think he should be held up as a beacon of how to run a club, Wigan have had some fair slices of luck along the way, particularly with sales, which has sadly eluded us - Holden and Lee were maimed, Cahill had that blood clot just before a World Cup in which Matt Upson played every game, and that's without mentioning Muamba.

How much freedom should we have given our managers? And more importantly how much should they have in the future?

Well from what we saw on panorama it seems PG was very hands on when it came to negotiating deals

The point about whelan was not that he's a good example of how to run a club but as a bloke who has run a football club he was in a position more relevant than most to pass comment on it, and back then he said something wasn't right in terms of how we were ran for us to have got into the position we had

Seems he was right

Don't mistake this for respect on my part

Fair enough Zico, reading back your comment on Whelan, you were referencing his comments on us more than his own record. My mistake as he makes my p*ss boil with his rentaquotery.

On PG yes we all saw Panorama but it didn't give any flavour as to if he was willing to put the kybosh on incoming deals deemed bad value for money though within a predefined budget.

I'd love to know what sign off process our signings went through, particularly post relegation. Plenty talk of being a trading club though little evidence of signings with a potential resale value even getting through the door in the first place.

On a wider issue regarding the governance arrangements, the only internet reference I can find to non-exec directors is that Brett Warburton served in this capacity c2012 - he's hardly independent from the main board. A robust, independent non-exec could have helped hold the execs to account and might have helped us avoid this situation.

Maybe. But the Panorama film was heavily edited. The answers and the questions did not necessarily match, either.

Am sure it was edited but he was sat in a room with an agent discussing a players contract iirc

Recall was it Freedman saying he'd never known a chairman to be more about business than football?

I reckon he would have had a fair bit to do with it

And by the time we were back in the championship he had to take the gamble on players he thought would get us back quickly so maybe he let deals go through he wouldn't have previously

That's all conjecture of course

But panorama started it

Probably my fault. I'm trying to get my quota of posts in the Terrace Talk section up to par. Arguing in an empty room etc..

We are still dead shit, but some of the kids seem to have promise. Play them all against Ipswich, fuck it.

If we went with a front 4 of Silva, Clough, Feeny & Woolery it would certainly give us a greater goal scoring threat

However they are about 6ft between them so we would need to play it out from the back which has been a disaster for us this season in terms of basic errors

Only having 2 defensive players in front of the back 4 doesn't fill me with confidence either

I think the move is risky, it either works and we start converting more chances or we get opened up and start losing games 7-4

Suppose we have nothing to lose now either way

Looking down from his vantage point, the new bridge overlooking Victoria Station platforms Embankment observes the away days scenario.

08.21 , Early Dart strolls down the steps towards the ticket barrier glances at coffee prices ,sod that he mutters under his breath. Looking up at the departure board he fails to notice the arrival of Sputnik ( clutching his customary bottle of water ),Back up North, Pinocheo's Dad ,Grumpy Bat and Shark. He does however spot Ashburner Street Market Fish Stall Face shuffling along in his usual shifty manner.

The Bat also glances at the coffee price list yet another frown.

He then spots the piano under the steps.

Strolls over , sits down , Crocodile Rock fills the concourse.

Some guy tosses him a quid others follow suit, well I chucked him 15p . Grumpy scoops up the cash " that will do ". Goes and gets his coffee. ( not sure if this undeclared income )

Platform 1 train to Leeds via Bradford.

10.10 Arrive Leeds.

" its spitting !!! " Straight in Yates , beer and breakfasts ordered.

Trip Advisor review # They were bloody awfull and minus any bacon # Early Dart attempted to get us /a refund. No Chance.

On to The Horse and Trumpet , excellent Black Sheep.

Next stop The Ship ( est 1775 ) Couple of tasty barmaids unfortunately one of them was't into blokes and her misses was a right hodcarrier. Think its an unwritten rule , if your are in a lesbian relationship one of you has to be a minger,

On to Shooters sports bar.

Rammed upstairs, crafty move by Ashburner St, created a bit of space by chucking the Sharks ale all over the shop. Shark started circling , young Ash beats a hastily retreat elsewhere.

Meanwhile Back up North is standing mesmerized by a couple of twin peaks , poor girl must have been bloody frozen.

Back to the Ship, found interesting read on Albert Johanneson ( Google it )

Incoming Text from AWOL Ash.

" getting hammered in The Old Peacock."

Two taxi's summoned.

Now 14.46.

No Hassel in pub.

Onto the match. Yep 3 of us missed the first goal.

Suffered with the rest of the 751 brave souls.

Full time .

Headed back to The Peacock. ( Leeds fans only )

Back up North flashed a book of stamps.

Embankment stumbled through the door.

Ash shuffles in.

35 mins later realise no one else has made it,

1 phone call ,

Taxi to The Clayton Hotel.

A bit posh !!

Only 7 present , early darts done one.

Plenty of ale and chilling then 20.00 train back to Manchester.

Jumps on Bolton train.

Posh Totty onboard.

All straw hats long legs and accents.

" Alice with a flamming Y "

Sputnik and Pinocchio smitten .

Arrive Bolton.

The bright lights of Leena Tandori beckon.

Absolutely superb as usual.

Roll on Derby and Fulham.
