bgoefc Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 It would seem quite a few of our medal winners in Rio were successful despite suffering from a plethora of ailments, requiring the taking of banned substances under the "therapeutic use exemptions". This makes their accomplishments even more astounding given how poorly they were. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/sep/16/nicola-adams-laura-trott-fancy-bears Quote
Youri McAnespie Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Bradley Wiggins is allowed to take blue nuns, red devils and black pearls - all types of antiquarian prescription amphetamines, out of competition, on account of his Mod beliefs and religion. Quote

The revelations are all part of Russia's undermining of WADA and all it stands for. Asthma sufferers, in particular, usually have access to otherwise banned substances - under medical supervision. They simply have to declare the medication when being tested, and have their exemption certificate. The Yates twin who was suspended for 6 months was because his professional team's doctor had failed to complete his paperwork. Ultimately it is considered the athlete's responsibility. Alan Pascoe is one example of an athlete who was recommended to take up athletics when a youngster, simply to combat his asthma. I once stayed in the flat of a UK 800m record-holder, who coughed persistently thorough the night. I mentioned it to his flatmate who assured me that was milder than usual. Of course his opponents were unaware of his severe asthma, and he went as UK's undisputed number one for 5 years until young Steve Ovett came along. Laura Trott was a premature baby born with a collapsed lung - it is hardly surprising that she was and is on medication. Quote

Sweep Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 They're all cheating cunts. Correct Why not just declare open season and let them take what they want Quote
kent_white Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Is it just me that is underwhelmed by these 'revelations'? Quote
jayjayoghani Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 I guess some athletes could be accused of extending the truth. Seems to be an awful lot of elite athletes have asthma. http://www.bbc.com/sport/37382825 Quote
Sweep Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Is it just me that is underwhelmed by these 'revelations'? Not really, anytime other than just after the Olympics, nobody would give a fuck as they're utterly dull minority sports that nobody really gives two fucks about normally. With regards to the cyclists, everybody knows they're at it, they always have been, so no real surprise there. Quote
kent_white Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 I don't really see what alternative athletes with asthma have other than using an inhaler. Quote
only1swanny Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 I've just scanned the banned list, its massive, loads of stuff.. I'd be screwed then, as i do quite a lot of exercise i use Ventolin inhalers and propranolol Ones due to bouts of Pleurisy and the other to stop headaches... Quote

only1swanny Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 and don't forget Night Nurse. is that banned? Quote
madthatter Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 is that banned? https://www.brianmac.co.uk/articles/scni1a3.htm 'It is always recommended that when purchasing over the counter medicines to ask if they contain banned substances as some pharmacies have a list of the banned medicines (e.g. Night Nurse).' Not sure if that's still the case - I'm sure I read about a sportsperson who got done and it was found to be due to Night Nurse?! Tried to find a link but could only see above as relevant Quote
kent_white Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 What's Night Nurse got in it that's performance enhancing? Day Nurse has got pseudoephedrine so I suppose you could take it as a stimulant? Quote
land_and_sea Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 I'm surprised Ventolin is considered performance enchancing. I use it sometimes though less and less, since my asthma seems to be improving a lot. Anyway I hear they've made Ventolin available over the counter in the U.K at asda. Quote

Day Nurse has got pseudoephedrine so I suppose you could take it as a stimulant? They use it to 'come down' off the ale when they've been on a bender before events, a good swig of this and a decent nights kip and they're ready for competition, and not shaking like a shitting dog on the start line. Ventolin is a bronchodilator - so it open up the airways in your lungs. Maybe it could be used to increase oxygen supply to the muscles of non asthmatic athletes? Quote
Carlos Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 Short term maybe, I reckon all the elite cyclists have "asthma". Quote
land_and_sea Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 I guess every little bit helps.Ventolin seems so lightweight though. Hardly like one of your heavy duty steroids. Quote
Carlos Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 I've genuinely got Asthma so it makes a massive difference for me, no idea how it effects normal folk. Quote
RoadRunnerFan Posted September 17, 2016 Posted September 17, 2016 (edited) Asthma will get you out of all kinds of trouble. Paul Scholes half an hour late in the tackle? No card - "Not that kind of player." Edited September 17, 2016 by RoadRunnerFan Quote
