Though he’ll need to be getting some senior football somewhere next season I’d say (obviously with a clause to call him back if necessary). Mantra
If it's a 4-5-1 then it would be something like this Problem with 4 at the back is that we never found a solid pairing. Aimson and Santos was the closest we got to one but I wasn't fully convinced by it. Maybe Iredale changes that... Doubt we will ever play 442 under Evatt unless we play a diamond variant like so: Edited May 13, 2022 by Mantra
Tommy9322
Iles was saying Fossey is 95% done so I’d be very surprised if we didn’t play a back 3 next season. The one thing we’re definitely missing in my opinion is pace, John is decent going forward but have questions over him defensively and think he lacks pace at LWB to keep going up and down the wing, injuries are also a worry with him. This would be my order of preference for next season's starting 11. I haven't seen Iredale play yet but I put him over Johnston as he's a more of senior player and supposedly Cambridge's POTY so I think he could be an upgrade. Dapo over Lee, simply because on his day, Dapo is our best player and while he's not a natural 10 I think he will grow into it, while Lee's age and injury record means he may not be a consistent starter. Put Sadlier LWB behind John, simply because the website only let me put one substitute in for each position and had to fit Isgrove in at RWB. Sadlier could play CAM or RWB though but think he's second fiddle to both Fossey and Dapo/Lee. You've got Sheehan and Dempsey the wrong way round surely? Sheehan is a play maker like Morley. Dempsey has without doubt been better playing deeper and more defensive like Williams. Might get forward more, but the most Williams like of the other midfielders for me. Sheehan obviously not who I'd put in for Williams as a like-for-like. But even Dempsey isn't really a true DM. He's closer than Sheehan but we haven't really got anyone else like MJ. I think if anyone Morley is closest to MJ defensively, purely on his build. Not seen enough of Dempsey to really judge his defensive capabilities but he is more of a battler than Sheehan. Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted May 13, 2022 Site Supporter Share Posted May 13, 2022 Dempsey seems capable and able to be a box to box type. Williams, for me, doesn't have the legs to do that, so perhaps that's why his playing style is a bit different from the others.

He’ll be decent back up for when we have a couple of injuries but I’d like to think in 12 months time we’ve left him behind in terms of talent in the team. Shake hands and wish him well
Whitesince63
I think we’ve left him behind now with Fossey and Sadlier in front of him there and there are a couple in the young squad who might come in as well. Izzy did well in L2 but I think he struggled last year with an end product.

He will be well remembered here for his efforts in 20/21 especially. We do need to move on from Isgrove/Kachunga/Aimson at some point. I like Izzy but I just think he’s limited and if we’re going to move forward we need better and for me Sadlier is far better. Izzy will be a squad player this year for sure but I can’t see him getting many starts, especially if we do sign Marlon.

This kind of makeshift solution is not what cuts it in terms of getting to that top two. We need a new holding midfielder and our aim should be to improve on MJ Williams. That's what progression is. If we spend the season buggering about with Johnston, Amos and Iredale covering for Williams in that role we're not serious enough about automatic promotion. Sadlier is the better player ability wise but Isgrove would be my 2nd choice at rwb. Sadlier should be further forward or on the left. Dapo is a better player than Johnston but I wouldn't want him at centre half.
