Transfer Gossip

BBC's gossip column is linking Holding with a move to Luton and Nat Phillips with one to Middlesbrough.

Imagine contract negotiations for most Prem clubs might be "you get £80k a week, but if we happen to go down that gets reduced to £30k".  At Luton it will be "you're on £30k a week from next season, but you can have a nice fat lump sum for playing 8 months in the Prem".  Would be a  logical for Holding as he needs to prove himself again and that will probably be in the championship realistically.

Think Luton want him on loan which is no good regards sell on fee as his deal ends next summer

Wolves and Palace linked

Along with Mallorca and Sevilla

He's in demand if seems but knowing our luck he'll leave on a free

If we don't sign anyone in this transfer window, it will be a helluva gamble and a massive show of faith in the current squad.

Having stated that the objective for this season is promotion IE must surely realise that we can't afford to slip to 20 points behind the leaders and risk the lottery of the playoffs or fail to take points off the other contenders as we did last season.

We've already dropped home points against Wigan - and Derby will be another big test so these players have really got to step up now, especially in the big games and against hard pressing teams.

I wonder if the players are listening to their own hype because we've been sloppy in chunks of every game we've played and we are nowhere near ruthless and efficient enough to be odds on to win enough points. At this stage I wouldn't say we're one of the top two teams in this league despite the hype about the division being weaker this year - looking at the signings made by other clubs there are a number of teams who have the early potential to finish higher than us - anyone in the current top half plus Barnsley and Wigan could be contenders. And we can't afford to take the foot off the gas when playing less fancied teams like Burton and pissing away points like we did last year.

The squad is OK but they have to be absolutely on their best game from the first minute of every match, take nothing for granted, scrap for everything, handle the pressure better - and hope we keep the injury list down.

It's good that Evatt backs his players, but personally I reckon we're still a couple of quality signings light if we're going for the automatics. I hope and pray they'll have proven me wrong come the end of the season.

This current squad is good enough to win this league.
There, I've said it and I believe it.

Whether we do win the league is another matter, based on mental/physical strength, application, attention to detail and the ability of the management to get the most of the players.

What u think traf is what you've said and I've said in that the back 3 defenders need to be just that.   Now toal and Santos are shoe ins, what we saw of Forrester at burton also puts him in that 3.   From what I have read Jones had a better game at rwb and so that's 2 for that spot.   From the changing of personnel and positions last night is mr evatt going down this route?  Would we sign another c.half as iredale isnt one ?  A lwb as well maybe as John and sadlier must be packing their bags this week.

Gonna be an interesting few days and I would love us to issue a statement with incoming ( i dont mean sharon type statement)

I also decided in the build up to the opening game that this squad was good enough

after the first 3 league games I still believed it

Wigan knocked my confidence

Burton neither here nor there

but we now have two big home games coming up against teams who are looking to get promoted / fancied for the top 6

they'll have seen what Wigan did, and will come with a game plan

it may be that our normal plan A is enough

but these are the games where if things aren't going to plan, we need to adapt and show we've learnt from what happened v Wigan and in other such big games last season when we mostly did not win

I still think we should be aiming for a top 2 finish

will asses again at the end of September or after Stevenage which will be 10 games in

I just want to see something that suggests Wigan was a one off and we have got over it, regardless of the results

My point exactly. Have to get the big game mentality. Have to learn to stay calm and play under pressure with opposition breathing down their necks. Have to concentrate every second. Have to respect every team we play and treat every game like a cup final. Have to give everything effort wise every game. Have to be brave and disciplined.

I think that's what IE is banking on - he's backing them to do it.

Do that and we're in with a chance. Even if they do that and fail, they'll get my respect. They've fallen a bit short of those standards at times recently but that can change.

I think that we need to be more flexible in formation, with us perhaps having a soft underbelly.

What's wrong with putting more in midfield for example, as we did last year at Peterborough?

I mentioned it in the match thread last night, that IE tends to make attacking changes in games (understandable last night) but it's not necessarily the right thing to do every game.

Fight fire with fire, and if a team is stopping out midfield from doing its thing then maybe another one in there, to counteract or be prepared to allow the press against us and go over the top- but use strikers who will play that way.

I note he made a comment that when we'd been three up by half time, we hadn't gone on and put them to the sword. Whilst that would be nice, we all know it's not always easy to maintain that level in a second half, and sometimes changes don't help if the team as a whole has dropped its levels.

Funds raised from the Wanderers Bond will be used to supplement sporting enhancements including player recruitment, training facilities and advanced sports science, and to the development of revenue generating facilities at the University of Bolton Stadium and for improving connectivity at the stadium.16 May 2023

But surely there must be some player investment by the owners as well as the bond money raised and if so the million or so already spent doesn’t seem like the kind of investment I’d expect if the ambition is automatic promotion. We claimed to have £4.5m from the bond so surely that leaves some latitude for signings?

And don’t forget the Swiss investors not sure how much they have put in but Sharon thanked them for there backing back in the Summer

More in midfield?..... We had 3 against 2 v Wigan & still lost out. Man for man we match anything in this league, where we may come up short is game management & mental toughness.

See, I don't buy this 3 against 2.

What was their formation 4-4-2 or some such?

Having 4 in there doesn't necessarily mean 2 central and 2 winger types.

I do agree though that toughness and management are important, and if that means more in midfield then so be it.

If it means 4 at the back and an extra body up top and play more direct, so be it.

One thing for sure is that he isn't bringing any more in, so he has to utilise players in such a way as to maximise results and beat the better teams.

And only two weeks ago he said he would be very surprised if there wasn’t any players coming in and ones leaving .
The performances since wouldn’t of persuaded him otherwise so either is targets are no longer available or he is just keeping is cards close to is chest

It may be that we just haven't been able to get the ones we wanted in.

In a way I'd rather we don't fuck up our system because of it, but stick to our guns.

If that means waiting a bit longer, so be it.

That might mean some communication to that effect though, as folk may become frustrated.

I’m concerned about people’s expectations regarding the supporters bond going towards transfers funds. The club operates at a loss and needs all the help it can get.

We’ve spent a rumoured £800k on Nlundulu, Forrester and CMG, which is way more than most at this level.
Throw in wages/agents fees/signing on fees for those signings (and all of our other incomings), plus the new contracts we’ve handed out and improvements to the stadium etc. It soon adds up.

Appreciate that’s easy to say when I haven’t personally invested.

I don't know what the club is making in terms of profit/loss.

Bound to be a bit shitty at first, especially when covid is thrown in.

That should now be behind us, and I'm not sure that FV could nor would allow us to continually operate a loss.

That wouldn't look good neither if looking to attract additional investment.

So far, they seem to have managed to secure that, but that must involve a business plan that is promising to prospective investors.

I'd also say that with 3rd tier crowds of around 20k, it wouldn't surprise me that gate income is higher than was perhaps anticipated.

I assumed we HAD signed numerous keepers, wing backs, forwards, midfielders. Or did I miss something?

You didn't miss anything. Not sure where this bollocks has come from that we haven't signed anyone in this window?

Nathan Baxter
Joel Coleman
Josh Dacres-Cogley
Dan Nlundulu
Will Forrester
Carlos Mendes Gomes
Paris Maghoma
Zac Ashworth

Contract extensions for Charles and Thomason

Training Ground improvements

Stadium updgrades incoming

It seems the Wigan game really fucked with peoples' heads. Understandable to a certain extent, but not to the point of re-writing reality.
