Big E
33 minutes ago, thebells said: This isn’t quite the case. Santos wants to focus on impacting the team without the pressure of captaincy. It’s a role that adds little value but, in the case of Santos, has added a weight of pressure that he can do without. You could argue that means he’s not a leader. And you’re probably right. But Evatt hasn’t ‘realised’ it. It’s the outcome of a professional conversation. I mentioned a few weeks ago, you’ll likely find they use different captains on the pitch this season, with Toal and Thomason at the top of that list. Arfield is very much in the Jerome mould in terms of playing time. So santos has told evatt he doesn’t want to be captain ?

Noticed we have 23 with keepers and gomes There's been no change to the number of players we can register as far as I'm aware By my count, we actually have 26 registered senior players, but goalkeepers don't count and we can opt not to register CMG We can also expect Matheson, Carty, and Khumbeni to leave on loan

Can’t win here Santos can he? 🤣 option 1; He cracks on as a captain, which in all honesty means very little on the pitch. But as the name carries some pride and association with it, let’s say he’s keen to hold onto it, not to relinquish it as he still feels it’s something he can do while maintaining good performances - critics clamour that Evatt and Santos are weak and there should have been a change. option 2; Santos and Evatt chat and agree to take captaincy off him. Translated as Santos has told IE he doesn’t want to be captain - critics will moan that we had it wrong in first place or Santos has no pride relinquishing captaincy. The most likely scenario is, a talk has taken place, Santos will remain captain, but leadership duties will have some shared responsibility and delegated throughout some of the likely candidates; Thomo, Demps, Airfield, Jones - critics will moan it’s not enough as Santos should have been publicly shamed for standing on the ball too long. I think it’s the most overrated topic of influential discussion we’ve had post Wembley. Yes we need leaders and experience (aka Airfield) but they don’t need to wear “captain armband” on a Saturday. End of season conversation, honest discussion, look internally for new leaders. More of an agreed outcome then Santos telling Evatt or vice versa Santos is a senior pro, and will remain influential behind the scenes. But Forino isn’t here to make up the numbers and Santos has bigger things to worry about.

Wanderlust
Interesting post match interview with Evatt today (on club site) in which he spoke about transfers implying that as we're looking to buy players in a different market than we're used to, negotiations are more protracted and generally harder, but they're working on it. Given that Killie value Armstrong and need him for Europe I think there was a nod to that deal still being on the cards. Also confirmed that Arfield is viewed as a replacement for CJ in the role of mentor/motivator as I thought, but that he's fit and keen to play. Forino injured along with 6 others but it is what it is. And TBF, the 14 first teamers and 7 B teamers involved today did pretty good so we'll be fine. If Arfield is "only" a replacement for CJ, ie not starting league games and spending most games coaching from the touch line, that doesn't fill the "bastard/captain" void. I think most agree we need the type of character to take hold of a game at Blackpool or Barnsley and demand a performance from the team. Generally speaking we know its too late when we're 1 or 2 down after 65 minutes, All will be revealed, and of course he isn't the last signing, but I'd be surprised if he wasn't expected to start a decent number of games. Whitesince63
I’d say more of a Kieran Lee than a Jerome personally, someone more of an influence on the pitch than off it but he sounds like the positive type we need in the dressing room as well so seems a very good signing. London Wanderer
11 hours ago, Wanderlust said: CJ was last season's exoerienced mentor/motivator brought in to do a specific job on and off the pitch. With Arfield only making 6 starts in the MLS and being primarily used as a sub when the game required, it wouldn't surprise me if that is his job here. Doesn’t look like the aggressive fcker we desperately need in the middle.

I think George is that and hopefully this season he’ll learn not to give away the stupid fouls, especially in non threatening positions that he did last year? Arfield looks tough enough for me and the two of them together could work well.

Or Arfield has been brought in to mentor and develop Thomason, make him more effective in what he does well, and remove those elements that lead many (including me) to believe him to be as much a liability as an asset. If Arfield can do this, then it’s a great job, irrespective of anything he does on the pitch.

Hopefully he’ll be more influential on the pitch than CJ was whilst being equally as influential off it? We need to see who else is signed during the window because it’s fairly clear there are still a few more coming in.
