Loyal White
I think we’re going to move to a 5-2-2-1. Sheehan and Tomo sitting. Collins and Armstrong either side of Charles/Ade. Potentially gives us some more options to break the press and deal with those teams which sit. We’ll see but wouldn’t surprise me.

Same goes for a really good proportion of the season. But he fits perfectly with our flat track bully status. When the going gets tough, he's all over the show and simply cannot handle a high press. Humphries/the Pompey chap away/Murphy for Oxford etc being prime examples. He just hasn't got the speed of thought or turn of pace to deal with some fuck either pressing him or running at him with the ball. Then we have everyone's biggest gripe, which obviously alot is owing to our style of play and probable direction from the manager.... Walking about with the ball. It's become a beacon of our fundamental problem. Slow paced, no intensity and it just looks fucking shit and makes folk restless. It invites pressure, it then makes us make mistakes and it's absolute food and drink for a team with bags of energy. Every single move, every single attack, every single bit of play is dictated by Santos. He's the heartbeat, but when that heartbeat is slow, ponderous and not at it, we are fucked. And again it just looks shit no matter how many phases of play we are trying to dictate. I've just no idea why instead of walking about or worse standing about when Sheehan is marked out of the game and there's fuck all on out wide he can't just drive forward with the ball. Fuckin run with it lad and see what happens. Probably sounds ever so simple but just don't bloody stand there. This is an excellent post Gonzo. The better teams we've seen in league 1 have pressed Santos into mistakes (Pompey last season, Sheffield Wed, Ipswich season before etc), but even the weaker teams have realised you can do a kind of half press where you leave Santos to have the ball, but mark everyone else tightly. Completely slows us down and kills any momentum and impetus we have. The Shrewsbury manager even explained it to the media after their 2-2 draw in the penultimate game last season. Has to be the main thing we address in our style of play this year, even if we seem to be sticking with a very similar formation.
noxid
Anyone know if we are due to receive any kick back payment from Germany when Afolayan and his St Pauli team were promoted to the Bundesliga? Might be significant for the transfer budget.

No top club was touching him after his ankle injury but we took a punt. And Alan Thomson and more recently Kieren Lee

The manager has clearly told Santos to slow the game down and stand on the ball. If we got rid of Santos his replacement would do exactly the same. If he's instructed to do that, then it's incumbent upon others to move and be available, whether that's a short or a long pass. For me, the biggest issue was an inability to adapt to an opponent that was stopping our primary way of playing.

Santos gets all the stick for slowing the game down but Toal's getting off a bit lightly in all this! He often does the foot on the ball thing, although he looks less comfortable doing it, its clearly not his natural game. The common denominator is the manager so its not going to change by merely selling a player.
Lancaster18
Thoughts on Bradley Dack? Apparently in talks with Gillingham. Depending on wages due to his injury record, could see him doing a job in league 1 for us adding some goals lost from maghoma.

Traf
I think Toal got a very easy ride last season. He's a talent and a bargain, but had some shockers last Eason without getting called out for it.

Imo, he’s our most overrated player, gets bullied out of it by a big CF and is often caught out of position. Definitely got potential but he’s still young and coming from a different level of competition. Needs to get a bit more muscle and add some nous to his game. thebells
if Dion Charles came up against Ricardo Santos and we didn’t know how he was, most on here would be lauding an outstanding centre half and suggesting he’s the sort of player we should be signing We possess one of the (if not the) outstanding league one / two centre halves and have been lucky to have him. There’s a reason Championship clubs haven’t come in for him, and it’s simply that he doesn’t possess the ability to deal with their speed of movement. He’d be gone within 12 months of us getting promoted. At this level, he’s outstanding. Joni Mitchell had it right
