The first mile of any run should be warming up and getting your breathing correct so yes, if you are going for a time do a warm up mile before.

Re gait analysis I have my doubts about its value. If you are not having problems and your shoes wear evenly then you haven't a problem. If you do get it done then go somewhere proper, you hear stories of people getting conflicting results from different stores.

The more I read into it the more I think about of worries about knackering your joints is misguided. Running makes bones stronger and denser and ligaments bigger and stronger so it should if anything prevent injuries.

Finally when increasing mileage Little Henry's and my coach always has us increase a mile, consolidate the next week then add another mile the following week etc. Give your body time to recover and rebuild. Your long runs should be at a comfortable talking pace and not about speed, you can cover that on your shorter runs.

Thanks WM. Yes, I'm the same about Gait analysis, its just I keep getting a pain in my left ankle and throughout my right foot the further distances I do. I don't have a even wear on my right foot, I heelstrike on the right hand side quite badly. Mainly I tried on a load of trainers (and had to run up and down the street looking like a right plank, and bought the ones that were most comfortable)

Going to give the warm up more time and then try and increase to 6k this week.

Also, for the money I spent, why are proper running training so bloody ugly. I was worried that I might have to buy a pair of Brooks. They looked like Alien dressed up for a Hen night.

I used to run up to Little Hulton and back on the old Bolton-Eccles railway line - that many devil dogs running amok I started carrying a large screwdriver (in my top pocket - not brandishing it in hand :)) to defend mesen, Maximus against the CGI tiger style, in case of attack...

Good work btw, whites man (both marathon and snaring Swanny)...

Gym 4/5 times a week but I still can't run more than a few hundred yards. I'm not build for it. It's got to be genetics I reckon.

Interval training is what you need.

Run for two minutes. Walk for 2 minutes.

When your feeling run then jog then walk, then back up again. Chop it up.

Keeping your heart rate down and steady is key to burning body fat. If you heart is going like the clappers and you're blowing out of your arse, your only burning glycogen and stored sugars. Not fat.

If you carry on an blast through the other side, you'll use everything up. But there's no point running like mad for 15 minutes ,getting all out of breath and killing yourself. You're better off extending the time, either a nice steady jog or like I say above do interval training. It's perfect for folk that can't crack running for long periods. Short periods will only achieves cardio vascular progress only.

If only I knew where I could get hold of some of these miracle tablets!

T3 tablets are the lazy bastard option. Work wonders for me. Still a fat bastard but know after one month of them will be able to enjoy stocking upto fat bastard status again
