Tonge moor green jacket Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 Interval training is what you need. Run for two minutes. Walk for 2 minutes. When your feeling run then jog then walk, then back up again. Chop it up. Keeping your heart rate down and steady is key to burning body fat. If you heart is going like the clappers and you're blowing out of your arse, your only burning glycogen and stored sugars. Not fat. If you carry on an blast through the other side, you'll use everything up. But there's no point running like mad for 15 minutes ,getting all out of breath and killing yourself. You're better off extending the time, either a nice steady jog or like I say above do interval training. It's perfect for folk that can't crack running for long periods. Short periods will only achieves cardio vascular progress only. An interesting article here; more to do with ratios. http://www.builtlean.com/2013/04/01/fat-burning-zone-myth/ Quote

It stands to reason if you sprint for 20 minutes you're going to burn more of everything than jogging for 20 minutes. That's not the point. Some people will sprint for 10 mins, get completely fucked, send your heart rate in to overdrive and burn nothing but glycoge then call it day. The alternative is to do something steady for longer. It's whatever works best and your comfortable with. Quote

I've spoken to two GPS about best way to go about it- one said consume less that you burn, the other said everyone's different and you have to find your own way. Personally I've found shoving a mower about all day etc doesn't seem to burn much off. Having a spell of cutting and splitting wood is more effective. Can't maintain it all day, and sometimes blood sugar level will drop quickly and feel a bit dizzy, but doing a good session and then something a bit more gentle is helping. Quote

I used to think I could eat and drink what I wanted because I was either lumping plasterboards about in my old job, or a big fuck off stick about in my current. Like you say, it doesn't work like that. Road diggers and flaggers would look like Olympic swimmers if it did I struggle like fuck to find the right balance though. Cutting carbs is ace for losing weight, but I need loads of energy for work, similar to you I'd imagine. These office jockeys have it right that sit and recover all day eating protein and smash the gym at night Quote
tarian1979 Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 I sit in an office eating chocolate most of the day Quote

Id just hoped they might be a little more helpful with ways of losing weight in a healthy manner. Like the gonz Meister said; finding what suits you is important, but its not always easy. Tried the porridge thing, though I still get hungry mid morning, perhaps just a little later than normal. Had a full English the other morning, and the high protein level kept me feeling full for longer and didn't feel need for a snack. Not sure I could do that every day though. Was reading recently that traditional Norwegian woodsmen could burn up to 4500 calories per day- that does take some managing. Quote

I remember Michael Phelps saying that during competition, he would have to eat about 12,000 calories a day - fuck knows how he found time to get in the water. He must have had some epic meals Quote

kent_white Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 At the risk of sounding like a massive gayer - I've been eating according to the slimming world principles for about a month now. Cooking from scratch using their recipes and so forth. Lost about 5kg during that period and have eaten a shit load of food. The meals I've made have been tasty as well. I can recommend it if you want to change your diet for weight loss. Just to point out - I've not been going to the weekly things. Apart from once when I paid a tenner to get all the gumph. Quote
Tonge moor green jacket Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 I've been craving more veg than ever recently. What does this mean? Quote

I tried slimming world a while ago with what I would call at best mediocre success. I was miffed at the time and fucked it off. I didn't like the way it felt like an odd cult too. Anyway, I have a dietician now, yep, I'm a wanker, and am now using a kind of 5-2 diet which is giving me great results. We got on to discussing slimming world and she said not all diets work for all people. She gets proper peeved with it as she's been to uni to do this, has a masters but the leaders of these groups have been on a short course and think they're gurus. Not having a pop at you like obvs. as what with you bring medical you probably know this anyway but just saying. You can only imagine what she thinks of juice plus Quote

You can only imagine what she thinks of juice plus Don't let BGOEFC hear you slagging juice plus or he'll be offering you out! :-) I imagine your dietician is right. I like lots of food - so slimming world is decent in that respect as you can eat what you like providing its lean meat, fruit and veg or certain carbs. Which works for me. Plus I like cooking so it's fun going through the recipes and adapting them. Had salt and pepper chilli chicken tonight and it was ace :-) 5/2 wouldn't work for me as I'm a nowty bugger if I'm hungry and I also can't sleep unless I've eaten well. But like someone else said - essentially - they all work by building in a calorie deficit. Quote

MalcolmW Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 The Swansea Harrier aiming for a 2018 Commonwealth Games selection in his first Marathon was the first UK finisher, and will presumably be back in London for the World Championships in August. He has run 14 parkruns, in Llanelli/Swansea/Cardiff. His fastest is 15:01 and his slowest by a long way is 18:45 but that was on a Christmas Day (his next slowest is 17:00). Quote
