Vela Manning Twitter Spat

I'm not on social media because I don't want to start thinking of friends, relatives and acquaintances as twats. When I've had a look in the past that's how I felt it would pan out...

Problem is it's getting all-pervading, I've heard people be almost boastful that they don't use/check their regular SMS text service anymore as 'only my mum texts me these days...' - it's bollocks.

A player, especially one like, say, Reece Wabara or David Beckham may argue they need a public social media presence for their other interests...

I agree btw, but in this day and age it's almost like banning players from going into pubs or nightclubs ten or twenty years ago.

Wasn't life easier 20 years ago. You might see a player in town. Be chuffed he was one of us because he was pissed in the same pub, then be over the moon when he has a five minute chat about football with you. Now you've got not very bright lads with shit loads of time on their hands. They're being told they're brilliant and they can pull any dumb fit girl they want. Vela obviously spends his free time reading about himself. It's the second time he's pulled someone up on reviewing him. Why care about lion of Vienna no one else does? I'm embarrassed for him and involving madine who's been done for assault seems I'll advised at best. Why is no one at the club advising them on social media? Do your talking on the pitch and you won't get a bad review problem solved.

Thommo (Alan) and others, but always Thommo ;) were regulars in Cottons/Hogshead on Friday afternoons/evenings when it was the after work pub of choice for girls/women (and thus also for lads led by their...) I never saw them get any serious meethering or meither of other kinds. It was round about when The Varsity took over this role (Friday after work boozer) that I reckon' is when the culture changed, and when players must've started supping elsewhere, or perhaps daren't be seen out on Friday at all, even for a few afternoon scoops - never saw players in town after that (on Fridays)...Simpler, happier times.

If I was a manager none of my players would have a public social media account. No good can ever come of it.

It's just unnecessary mither.

I know a bloke who "works from home" every Friday yet on that day every week his Facebook feed is full of check ins at various boozers and restaurants across Mnanchester.

Bit later but used to love it when Nolan, hunt etc used to come in Scott's after the match. Remember frandsen tommo and others in town, better days them. To be fair I'm not sure what reception vela would get coming in to Scott's after a match with his name initialled baseball cap on.

We'd be welcoming I reckon'...Reece would drum up interest in his clothing line if he came in dressed like this...We'd all be hankering after a similar coat I'm sure...

Aye, but he's not offering folk out because they think their water bill is too high.

He didn't offer anybody out if you read the rest of his tweets. He was saying that this Manning bloke should come to the training ground on Monday and prove what a good player he is - wasn't he?

Same shit, though, isn't it? And I'm not sure he was implying Madine wanted a keepy-uppy comp.

I'm pretty much with Vela on this one, FWIW, but the suggestion that you're not entitled to an opinion unless you've played at the same level is bollocks.

It's the prevailing opinion at the moment, though...No criticism from laymen of anyone with even the meagrest smattering of talent.

"Ed Sheeran's shite"

"Can you play the guitar?"

"Well, a bit of Napalm Death..."

"Well, don't criticise poor Ed then, he's betterer than you"

I'm not saying that this Manning fella isn't entitled to an opinion. I'm just pointing out that JV doesn't threaten him like some folk are trying to make out.

Years ago in scamps you'd be drinking with the likes of Sam, Mickey Walsh and the rest, you'd tell em they were shit that day, and had a chat about it, that was how it was, and they'd more or less agree with you, fuck social media, easy to hide behind a keyboard.
