DirtySanchez
All going well on Planet Braverman Mr Justice Fordham said Home Secretary acted unlawfully by failing to increase subsistence allowance from £40.85p to £45 a week By Charles Hymas, HOME AFFAIRS EDITOR 22 December 2022 • 8:00pm Home Secretary was advised by officials to uprate asylum seekers’ support to meet the rising cost of living Asylum seekers are to get a 10 per cent cost of living boost after Suella Braverman was found by the high court to have acted unlawfully in failing to give them the increase. Internal documents reveal the Home Secretary was advised by Home Office officials in the summer to uprate asylum seekers’ support to meet the rising cost of living or risk breaching the Government’s legal duty to ensure asylum seekers were not left destitute. In a damning high court ruling seen by the Telegraph, Mr Justice Fordham said the Home Secretary had acted unlawfully by failing to increase the subsistence allowance from £40.85p a week to £45 a week after inflation spiralled from three per cent to more than 10 per cent. The judge took the unusual step of issuing a “mandatory order” forcing the Home Secretary to implement an immediate increase in the rate of asylum support to £45, which will affect at least 85,000 asylum seekers at a cost to the taxpayer of £18 million a year. Mr Justice Fordham said: “The failure to consider this issue and make any decision was unlawful. In public law terms this, in my judgement, was an abdication of function. I can only assume Mounts is saying "our figures are more accurate than other countries, so we should disbelieve theirs"? Is that the gist of it @Mounts Kipper? It's a bullshit argument anyway Cheese. It's true that not all countries measure GDP in exactly the same way although a lot of the key measures are the same. When UK manufacturing declined we put forward the argument that we should weight the measurement of consumer spending as indicative of GDP - in order to maintain investor confidence in the £ and FTSE/UK PLC. Seems fair enough if the economy has changed. But when consumer spending falls as well, we can't really turn round and say GDP has "appeared to have fallen" more because of the way WE now measure it. Whatever way we measure it, when comparing each country now with how it was before using the same measures each country has used historically it's as clear as day we are performing worse than others and increasingly so since we left the EU. It was set up after the war to address human rights atrocities and the UK were one of the leaders in its formation. What message would it send to the world if we left ? It would reinforce what most of us already know. This Govt doesn't care about human rights.
