US President-elect Donald Trump’s senior economic advisor Stephen Moore told BBC Radio 4's Today programme last week that the UK "has to choose between the Europe economic model of more socialism and the US model which is more based on a free enterprise system."

He said the UK is "caught in the middle", but believed "Britain would be better off moving towards more of the American model of economic freedom and if that were the case, I think it would spur the Trump administration’s willingness to do the free trade agreement with the UK".

Brexit was going to give us the ability to negotiate a new free trade deal with the US. Until we didn’t.

Then the Conservatives got rid of a load of trade negotiators in the US. A decision made by the (then) business and trade secretary - Kemi Badenoch.

Negotiating anything with Trump will be very hard work.

Looks like the focus is on improving our position with the EU. Which is much more sensible than the ridiculous approach that the Tories took of “we’re off, fuck you; by the way how is the oven ready bullshit pie coming along?”

Brexit referendum and the promise of free trade with the much of the rest of the world also coincided with the election of Trump. He adopted protectionist policy at exactly the wrong time for us as many other nations engaged tit for tat.

Might want to wait and see how hard Trump fucks the US economy before pledging to align with it in the hope of special treatment. Have you seen the nutjobs he's appointing?

It would be excellent, although it goes against everything Trump says he stands for (putting America first) , so I'm not sure I can see it happening. Hope I'm wrong though.

Think we’ve better chance of a deal now trump in charge. And he’s friendly to the UK, less friendly to EU…. Dynamics have changed now he’s in power and I think it’s better for the UK.
