I've absolutely no idea what it was all about but he used to look at the attendance figures published in the newspapers and go mental. To his dying day he wouldn't touch a Warbies product There's no question in my mind that went on at Burnden. Both my Dad and Grandad would have been saying similar things about the Warbies. But I think in the Rioch era they probably redeemed themselves a bit. Their patrician era of involvement at Bolton suddenly seems like a golden time compared to now! Capacity then was circa 42k, they brought around 10k, you couldn’t move except for the no man’s land in the Embankment, yet the crowd was recorded as 17k. Members bolty58
Fiddling the crowd numbers was well known - no doubt it was happening. On some occasions it was just too fucking obvious! Burnden busting at the seams and they'd claim 20,000 on. What would I give to be in a packed Burnden Park watching our beloved Whites right now. paulhanley
At last managed to get together Bolton 2 Wigan 1 from the northern final of the Freight Rover in May 1986. An 8 minute video - all the goals and then the pitch invasion at the end. Classic stuff. Gate was 12,500 - looks like more to me even with Wigan's dismal following. There are a couple of glimpes of the Manny Road North terrace and stand lads in their full pomp here. Can't have been too often that such scenes were filmed. paulhanley
Of all the old videos of Bolton games I've got, this is my favourite. Roadrunner's predecessor, Easy Video, started filming Bolton games at the start of 1986 - so the second half of 85/6 onwards until Roadrunner took over in about February 1988. For some reason Bolton 1 Wigan 0 in 1984/5 was filmed in isolation (as was Bolton 1 Rotherham 1 on the first day of 85/6). No commentary - just a great atmosphere created by 6,000 fans. This is proper old school Burnden much as it was from the late 1970s. This is action from the first half of the game. The sounds of the Manny Road/Burnden Paddock come through quite well and the favourite song of the day seems to be "We're on the march with Charlie's Army - we're all going to Wembley". We were knocked out of the Freight Rover by Mansfield at home soon after. This is our first ever home win against Wigan. Things to look out for on the pitch include a missed sitter by Wayne Foster and a powerful shot from Jeff Chandler. Off the pitch it's interesting to see the Burnden Paddock suddenly burst in to a chant of "Manny Road, Manny Road". Clearly the Manny Road North lads getting up to no good at one stage. There are some Bolton players here of whom there'll be very little on film. Full team is Keeper: Simon Farnworth; Defence Brian Borrows, Ian Bailey (player who came on loan to BWFC several times), Ray Deakin and a young Jimmy Phillips. Two full-backs at centre-back there with McElihinney, Valentine and Came all absent for whatever reason. Midfield is Warren Joyce, Steve Thompson and Simon Rudge. Out wide is Jeff Chandler and Wayne Foster and George Oghani are up front. Tony Caldwell is on the bench. For Wigan a very long haired Tony Kelly is prominent. I'll get the second half up as soon as I can. Enjoy this Saturday afternoon from April 1985.

BoltonBoy80
Great video again Paul. Always love seeing burnden pre normid. What a place it was. Burnden paddock looks pretty packed near to away fans. Yet another game where Wigan fans got terrorised before and after game. To this day i truly hate driving down manchester road. Seeing what has replaced burnden is heartbreaking. I used to love walking down back of lever end round to burnden terrace. Those were the days. Thanks to your videos still fondly remembered

Thanks to your videos still fondly remembered I'm going to try to edit the second half today. It's pre-Normid but they made a load of changes in the Summer of 85 as well (new fences, bits of the ground closed off etc). This is Burnden genuinely as it was from about 78 onwards. The Wigan following that day is embarrassing. You can't see how many they have in the Burnden Stand but I reckon there's less than 1,000 on the Embankment. Just a shame that's all I have from Burnden in 84/5 and there's nothing in 83/4.
Duck Egg
Great stuff again Paul. I'm looking forward to the 2nd half now! A few things that sprung to mind watching it; All that unused empty paddock space with the home area looking completely packed. Wayne Fosters last season with us. I thought he'd already gone by then. St John's ambulance. What happened to them? Do they still exist? I can't remember ever seeing them at a game in recent years. We actually played some good football at times. The first attack on that clip showed about 5 or 6 passes at speed before we opened them up and created a reasonable chance. Seems a while since I saw that kind of thing too! I'm on the case with the second half. Before the end of today if I can do it. If not Monday or Tuesday. That unused area of Paddock was only segregated using a long pole like barrier. Amazing there weren't more examples of fans just ducking underneath and going for it. It was certainly packed until just beyond the halfway line but pretty sparse the closer you got to the Lever End. Yep - Wayne Foster was given a free at the end of that season. There's a video on You Tube of a 2-2 Second Division home draw v Chelsea in which he scores. ITV's coverage. I doubt there's many more of his games on film. It was odd with him - George Mulhall and John McGovern clearly rated him but the fans never really saw what they did!! Charlie Wright gave him the Free in May 1985. Those sides of 83/4 and 84/5 did play reasonable football. I think it was helped in this game by having Phillips and Deakin at centre back - both full backs really. Ian Bailey was a good player at third tier level and we were lucky to get him on loan. Brian Borrows was a class player who was sold to Coventry for £80000 two months after this game. We know about Steve Thompson and Warren Joyce but I have to say I am impressed by Simon Rudge in the fleeting glimpses we see of him in these videos - you'll see in the second half that it's his work that leads to our penalty. He's often in midfield (I'd always remembered him as a striker) and is neat, tidy, skillful and doesn't shirk a challenge. If he'd been 4 or 5 inches taller he'd have probably had a better career. paulhanley
Here's the second half of the match I posted earlier. Bolton 1 Wigan 0 in April 1985 (84/5 season). Things to look out for here include a few missed Bolton chances and also one from Wigan - none other than a rather youthful but portly Tony Kelly complete with long hair. His shot is followed by the one chant the rarely heard paltry and timid Wigan following ever had in those days "Wigan, Wigan, Wigan". The winning goal followed some good play by Brian Borrows. A fierce shot from Simon Rudge hit the bar and as Tony Caldwell was about to pounce on the rebound, Wigan centre back Steve Walsh piled clumsily in to him and Warren Joyce to give away the 78th minute penalty, duly converted by a very cool Jeff Chandler. The clearly distraught Walsh (later of Leicester) and Kelly weren't the only Wigan players to later make good careers out of football. Mike Newell and Paul Jewell also played in this game. With the clock ticking down Chandler then came close to a second with a raking shot from outside the box. As full time approached the Burnden faithful whistled for the ref to end the game and ensure the ale tasted that bit better on Saturday evening. Tony Caldwell had a chance for a second on the breakaway as the regulars can be seeing congregating in the open area of terrace between the Paddock and the Lever End - ready for a quick getaway. Full time was greeted with glee as the familiar sound of the nasal sounding policeman on the PA drifted across Burnden in to the ears of the visiting fans. "This is a message for the Wigan supporters. The Wigan supporters. Please remain where you are. You will be escorted from the ground by the Police". Time for them to start shitting themselves about running the gauntlet up Manny Road while the rest of the footballing world tuned in to Sports Report and James Alexander Gordon on Radio 2. "Canon League Division Three .... Bolton Wanderers 1 Wigan Athletic 0"

A secondment to a different job has led to a longer commute, which means less free time. I don't have that Mansfield game though I'm afraid. Jimmy at Roadrunner will have the full match though so he'd be your best bet. Having vowed never to put derby defeats up I was thinking about putting up a defeat against Bury to give our bereft neighbours some much needed joy. Do I ?? Anyway - yes, I'll try to get back on it at some point.
