I was in the burnden paddock that day and what a battle ensued, looked like the manny road crew gave a right good account of themselves. 20 minutes ago, paulhanley said: I've not seen it talked about too much over the years. I'm glad someone else remembers it! We drew 1-1. It was West Ham's promotion season. I think they'd won the FA Cup as a Division 2 side the May before. They brought loads of lads & they were milling around everywhere. Me & Tony Longworth (again RIP) went for early drinks in the Cattle Market & 'bumped' into 3 of them at the end of Orlando bridge, sent 'em running back across the bridge! After the game, the Embankment opened up & they flooded out in their droves. I'd just bought a new jumper from Norton Barrie in Chorlton cum Hardy - cost a fortune at the time. First time worn & ended up throwing it in a bin on Moor Lane after it got ripped to shreds. 🙄

Orlando Bridge and the footbridge over the railway from Moncreiffe Street were always moody when there was a big away following!

I think he was called Denis & he had ginger hair. Always wore a red 'v' neck jumper. Lots of aggro at Worsley Civic on a Monday nights. This will have been before your time though. Lots of my Dad's side of the family are from Tyldesley and Atherton. I'm very familiar with the process you describe in the former and to a lesser degree in the latter. leigh white
I remember catching the 73 via L/H when Bolton played a friendly against Chelsea in 71, never seen so many reds piling on expecting a punch up with the rent boys.

The red Slazenger v neck was popular with us L/H lads in those days. Another mate of mine , JH , did switch though. Some great nights at the Civic. Duck Egg
My early years were spent in LH before leaving in 1979. Our school was almost half red half white. I still recognise a couple of lads at the match but I did learn of one lad, IM, becoming a red in the mid 80s. The glory hunting turncoat. All the names mentioned on this thread mean nowt to me but I imagine I knew many of them by sight. There were lots of familiar faces on away days in the 80s. People you knew were Bolton but didn't know to talk to.

Members bolty58
Was thinking about Barney last night and I have a recollection of him being in the Embankment (pre-Normid) when we were playing some club who had brought a big mob with them. Kicked off and the cops grabbed him and escorted him down the DMZ between the two sets of fans. He walked the whole way, escorted by rozzers, around the track and down the players tunnel with his hands on his head like a POW.
Burndens Bogs
Anyone remember a lad called Willy? He was a big scary looking skinhead from B'met who seemed to take over the mantle from FD as "top boy" in the Lever End probably around the mid 70's. I've never seen him since those days. I doubt he made the switch to the Reebok.

I remember him coming into our school at full time one day looking for the equivalent 'cock of the year' & to be fair to our guy (AB) he didn't back down. He was sent on his way by our deputy head, Norris, who came swinging his cane (which I was acquainted with)! I don't think he followed the team for a sustained period, just for a bit of aggro now and then. Bolty might know a bit more about him.
