I think the idea being that we need to get players ready for some first team contribution whilst 18/19 when we're in league 2. No point being a league 2 side and paying 19/20 year old lads to sit in the reserves when rest of the league fills their squads out with younger players. We don't have the luxury of paying money to catch the odd late bloomer - you can do that in the top 2 leagues not down here.

Time will tell if it works or not. we should have some decent lads from age U13 upwards, who will have signed when the club was still Cat 1, so hopefully they will benefit from this for the next few years.

My fears are ;

most local lads of quality below u13 will have already picked other clubs when they were 9, and  younger ones will do even more so from now on, so it's going to be more difficult to get the good ones in at an early age

The dropouts from city, united, liverpool, everton are now more likely to pick wigan blackburn, burnley, crewe, before us and will consider Accrington, PNE, Oldham, Rochdale, Fleetwood, Blackpool as well.

Any good talents we do nurture will be cheaper for big clubs to buy.

It's been done now, so we'll just have to see how it develops and back the club.

If the system was working I'd have more sympathy. But it hasn't. Our academy has produced square root of fuck all.

We shouldn't overlook the idea that u23s is a complete waste of time for most of the players and the clubs involved.

The players are playing against mainly (is it 3 senior players that can play?) other u23s and so aren't experiencing playing against older, stronger, more experienced pros like they would do in a reserve team so it doesn't bring them any closer to first team football.

Also people have to recognise that the top teams are very rarely looking at lower leagues to buy players. Arsenal signing Holding was an exception rather than the norm. Just read an article that Crewe’s academy costs £700k per annum to run. They have made £300k in players sales in last 4 years from academy players so £2.5m down.

But how many of those players are in the first team or played there  ? No idea myself but it’s not just about selling players on if you are bringing them through

So a player reaches 18, the decision is made if he's good enough to play in league 2 or not. If so they get offered a pro contract and a place in the 1st team squad.

The prem/champ teams will usually send these players out on loan to that level. But as we're at that level at the moment there's no point.

IF we ever get back up to the prem again then the club can look at bringing back the u23s

Not much fun, is it

No issue with living within our means.

See what happens but as discussed this could well turn out well.

Being shit every week isn’t much fun. That I’ll grant you .

Has he done summat to upset you? You seem very bitter

Nothing at all. I just know he is not very good at his highly paid job. Convince me otherwise. Just supporting FV. Doing what should have been done years ago.

The Q&A on the academy changes all makes a lot of sense and Tobias seems to have a level head. Not dressing it up as all brilliant but a trade off between having the option for players to play U23s and get more experience and also the need to be getting people first team experience quicker. I like that. Its a call that's been made. Hope it pays off.

I'm very unconvinced by McGinlay in a paid ambassador role though - these things to me just seem completely pointless ....

He is coming aboard to cement the already strong relationship with the university’s sports courses and making them more valuable to us.

“He is also coming back to the club to assist us in an ambassadorial role, in a more meaningful way.

“It is a more formalised role and we hope he will be able to use his contacts with former players who might have been forgotten or not acknowledged in the right manner down the years. We want to try and bring them home. He is a legend and we think it’s a great appointment for us.”

Cementing a relationship with the University's sports courses - why? What is the aim? And why is John McGinlay - hardly a sports science expert - the person to do this? Bring former players "home" - sounds like nonsense to me. This sounds like bunging him a few quid to stop him talking nonsense on the radio and being a nuisance. Not convinced at all. If there is a real role here I imagine there are millions better qualified....

If you're complimenting the changes to the academy structure etc, then why not show the same backing to other measures?

Perhaps they feel SJM with his passion for the club fits in with an ambassadorial role. It's not like he's coaching or similar.

Ok SJM will have to curb his media comments etc, and that isn't a bad thing; will be interesting to see what happens if DL goes!

Time will tell as to whether these are the right moves, but for now we just have to give them a chance.

I back the owners it doesn't mean one has to do so unquestioningly over every single decision. There is little sense in my view behind this particular one though its minor in impact. Not sure that disagreeing with a particular move or decision equates to not backing - and also it would be really really really weird to not question things that as presented don't make sense for the sake of it....
