Fair point and he was a class act for sure, but for every Cannavaro there are thousands of very capable central defenders over 6ft tall.

I might be old school, but i just prefer central defenders to have height.

In this league absolutely that should be the bread and butter, balls are gonna go in the air, height and strength will win it.

I thought Bridcutt was a liability today. I think he is our best midfielder but as a defender he gives too many free-kicks away. Southend were basically feeding off set pieces in the final third and we just kept them going. You may not need to 6foot2 to play centre half but you do need to know how to defend. He played 3 or 4 great balls but plenty more that just put us under pressure.

Agree with comments on their number 7.

First goal the header was from in the 6 yard box keeper has to come.

Funny how we see things. A number of times he was one on one with an attacking player and won the ball. Also intercepted a number of passes using his experience.

Certainly not a centre half though and obviously struggled to win aerial duels.

Immense when he blocked that pile driver with his bonce though. How he got up so quickly, god knows.

liability😀

He always plays that bloody deep anyway.

He's too good to be in defence or at the base of midfield. He might be hiding there.

Southends first goal shouldn't have stood, Harry Lennon used a hand on our defender to gain height.

Then the same player breaks his leg minutes later, i didn't see the incident but you could tell from the reaction from both sets of players that it was a serious injury.

Suspicion of handball by Jodo Doo trying to get the ball under control just before he shot + scored, i think the linesman spotted it and raised his flag but then lowered it.

Just had a look at the goals. He may have levered himself a bit, but (Earl) was under the ball a bit and made a weak effort.

I thought the one the linesman flagged for then put it down was the 2nd goal?

The ref indicated to him that he'd seen the incident so he lowered his flag. There was still a fair bit of play before Murphy scored

Wheater and Beevers certainly proved their worth last time.

Wheater scores today as well . He needs to sort the defence out quickly against a better side that will exploit our weakness to crosses  there will be another hammering is on the cards . We got lucky today especially when there defender fell over for the 3rd

Not one of these players is good enough for League 2. It’s start again next summer.

I think you're way over estimating Div 2.  Think how bad Div 1 is, and its going to be worse next season.  Not one player in our team today will struggle in that division.

Earl made a weak effort because he had the weight of Lennon on his shoulder imo.

Bridcutt thing like Man C's issue with Fernandinho playing there, doesn't add anything because of his lack of height and it takes him out of an area he's more effective in, screening the centre backs.

Matthews frustrates me, rooted to his line far too often and, although bad marking doesn't help, we let too many headed goals in from areas within his range to go and claim or punch.

Earl got better as game went on but not convincing me as a left back, positionally looked uncomfortable, especially defending far post on crosses. No better than Chicken at LB for me

We have got progressively worse without the ball over the past 5/6 games, miles too open when we lose it up field, huge gap between the three lines, need to tighten up big time and restrict spaces better. The other worrying trend of recent weeks has been passive, laboured starts out of Parky's book. However bad Southend are they took a 2 goal lead in their last game so surely we should have been sent out ready to combat such a start from them today and assert ourselves. Was on the brink of taking back what I said the other week about folk's impatience, though still can't be doing with the booing that went on.

Anyway, positives, three well taken goals and Darcy. That lad could be our next export to a higher level, got a lot to offer for sure.

Time for a celebratory Titanic Plum Porter to kick the festive season off!

After 25 mins, i thought it could be another Accrington, we were hopeless, but the 1st goal ( our 1st attempt on goal ?? ) gave us a lift.

2nd half, we stopped taking silly chances tip-tappying in defence & launched it clear which mostly worked better, & though the last few minutes were a bit scary, we just about deserved the win.

Agree about their no7 being impressive.

Just watched the highlights, think we need to concentrate on defending set pieces, pretty shit, even at this level. Bring back Wheater!

This.

A wins a win but from what 8 saw today (very little) the quality was shite.

I didnt understand why they had someone who could put a long throw in and only used it twice all game.

I noticed that & they had some free kicks that they wasted with poor shots which was crackers & let us off the hook considering the trouble we were having in defence, dealing with the ball in the air.

We aren't

That's the point

Earl at cb and Chicksen at full back

That's if we don't trust Edwards

Every fan I spoke to said the same even before the match got going. Beggars belief that Hill continues to weaken 2 positions (arguably 3 if you include left back) by playing Bridcutt anywhere but centre mid.

Hills been dealt a very shit hanf

When you've got shit cards you need to play any good ones well

Anyway, absolutely massive result and credit to the manager for that at least

Their 7 looks a player

Just let go by Fulham, born in Bury

In fact, quite a few of theirs looked to have a decent touch

Played 16 games for Rochdale and scored 2, so bound to be known by Hill.  Has got something about him but looks physically like a pub player.  I knew he was going to be a pain in the backside to us today when I commented on his short socks look.  Good of Hill to help him by playing a 5.5 foot centre half up against him.

Matthews was shite today. He stayed on his line for the first goal when he should have been dominating the 6 yard box. Seemed slow going down for the second too. Kicking poor.

Only time we have looked comfortable this season was when Hobbs and Wright were together and Bridcutt was in midfield.

It’s three points though so I don’t get all the negative comments.

Fuck me, we’re lucky to have a team.

And Crawford.  I'm fairly sure we havent played well once without Crawford.

Just had several more looks. Lennon does put an arm out early, and his hand is on earl's shoulder, though it's stretched out initially.

Earl gets done by the flight somewhat, it's a decent ball in fairness, but we need someone a bit more commanding back there from these set pieces.
