Just looked him up on Linked In. If it’s the same bloke, he’s on the league committee for appointing refs. Quite often, known problem games will get a committee person to referee so all the players know not to kick off.

Well, I think that’s the plan!

He's a league secretary at BBDFL. We've been told the FA will be attending games more often over the next few weeks to try and stamp out any bad behaviour. South Ribbles assistant manager got a straight red on Saturday for answering back to the referee.

Referees have a shit job. Whatever he/she gives will be seen as ok for one team and not for the other. My nephew was a ref in Bolton & Bury JFL and got so much shit, mainly from managers and parents, he gave up. He was damned when he did and damned when he didn’t.

  • 4 weeks later...

i was watching the lad so missed it- but the amount of complaints i received from parents. referee coaching their players, coaches disregarding rules. the league sec asked for feedback over whatsapp, so i told him (without mentioning the opponents- i look after a few teams). i then received a barrage of abuse from their manager, calling me a disgrace etc. he made a massive assumption, and apologised- but if the cap fits...

Come on then, how did you all get on with the silent coaching/spectating today?

What a bag of wank!

For those of you wondering what I’m on about.

a good move this imo, kids football is littered with pushy parents who just wheel their kids out every weekend to get a few internet likes and behave like absolute nobs

Tricky one that - it seems like it's just a one-off weekend to promote better behaviour. So not sure it's anything that will be with us to stay.

On one hand you've got young footballers that want to make it and will need to get used to dealing with the energy from the touchline and crowd. Then on the other hand you've got a huge number of kids and parents that just want a nice morning out to socialise and play a competitive game - Those that abuse referees and shout at kids in that environment are pricks and need to keep away.

You see parents of U-8s shouting instructions to their kids, shouting at the ref, etc.  It's bizarre behaviour.

Just let your kids play and enjoy then game.  Any tactical stuff they want to say to their kids should be given after the game.  During the game leave it up to the poor fucker who is trying to coach them in his spare time and for no money.

from a coaches perspective its ideal- but we should be heard.

keep parents quiet- had some trying to change penalty takers etc: and without wanting to sound xenophobic, i find eastern european parents the worst. i have had kids in tears from a bollocking off their dad (one played in a champions league qualifier in Ukraine), but its their native tongue so i dont know what they are saying.

referees should be encouraged to be more vocal- explain their decision as they make it, but be bang on with rulings*

coaches should only offer positive reinforcement- ask questions rather than telling players what to do; get the kids to think rather than be ordered. they will not learn if they just follow instructions

i'm talking primarily at a younger age, this evolves as they mature, but the ethos remains the same. when my team loses (very rare lol), i hurt, they should hurt- for a moment. they mistakes, we make mistakes and thats perfect, as it gives us chance to learn and evolve. once they leave that pitch, any problems they had should be left behind- enjoy the weekend and we go again at training.

fundamentally, football should be fun not mental

bang on- i could charge £20 an hour for my expertise, maybe i will, but at least 10 hours a week gratis, and normally at cost to myself... yet when i ask parents to step up to do their badges they surprisingly quiet

Coaches should be allowed to coach. If the best players in the world still need coaching then kids do.

Parents should keep quiet in regards to giving direction to their kids but should be allowed to cheer, praise encourage etc when they want.

If clubs have problems with certain parents then surely it’s up to the club to sort out with them?

finally some leagues are now starting to give points out for respect. Your kids team could win 10-0 but lose respect points because someone has said something, problem is the referees don’t let the clubs know what they have deducted for 🤷🏻‍♂️

Same everywhere, very few interested, most can’t be arsed putting nets up, running line etc.
