Drumming Bolton Into Your Children.

My lad has been indoctrinated by his Mum and Nan to whinge when footy is on the telly ever since he was a baby so has no interest in football outside of a kick around in the garden.

He is well aware though that once he's older I could give a shit whether he dates a lass, bloke or someone in between as long as they're not a united fan.

Trying my best. When you ask my 3 year old who his favourite is, he replies “Bolton” and he loves it when the club badge comes up on my phone / computer / the TV. But who knows what will happen when he gets to school and everyone else is Spurs / Arsenal.

My daughter was threatening to be a Red at 6 years old, but i think she was just doing that to wind me up - 10 years later she has a season ticket with me in the ESL and begs me to take her to every away game possible, she's now totally obsessed with all things BWFC........Job done.

Moving away made it easier with my  lad. Watching from afar the great days of Okocha, Djorkaeff, Campo, Hierro etc. and then attending around 3 games every time we visited (which was often) made it extra special. He has particular fond memories of a 4-0 win away at Swindon as we had a very eventful day including an encounter with a coach full of Bristol City fans at a remote pub in a country lane down in carrot cruncher territory. He was still singing "Oh Ricky you're so fine......." about 3 days later.

He begged me to take him to Stef's and swear he was 16 to get the emblem on his bicep at 14 years old. I work with him and every single day he gives me an update on what's happening at BWFC from browsing the net.

Wanderer for life. Once in, never out.

The lads still very much into It since 2016 and it was a good season to start

however it’s keeping it going high school starts next week and the school will be full of city & United kids

If we start to win a few games, that always makes it easier.  Never easy for kids seeing their team lose nearly every week.

Mine had this problem until he started going to aways.

Now he just says to them "ever been thrown up in the air by randomers and ran onto the pitch while you're sat watching on the tele in your front room?"

Very true my eldest was at junior school in Harwood just prior to Bruce joining us he struggled at school all pinkies he came home once ready to throw the towel in and join them but living on the street at7 year's old would have been a lot tougher than taking a bit of crap of a bunch of hangers on,it was easier for my youngest born in 91 only saw good times at first. Both white to the core now although my eldest lads mates are mostly followers of premier clubs (wankers).

Definitely, I struggled myself getting the motivation for some home games under parkinson & chino

Well that’s the plan for this season to get him on a few aways ( hopefully still happen), last season I bought another kids season ticket so he could take his mate kind of made it better for him. The high school he’s going to get free city tickets on a regular basis so need to watch that

Secondary school was in whitefield so i was one of a very few wanderers

Never considered anybody other than us,  but we were relatively succesful at the timd

Think i was about 20 when i nearly binned it off

Arranged to go watch boro at caernarvon, missed the coach so  kept walking, got the bus to the king bill and we won

Think it was leicester

Havent ever thought of not going since

That says it all really.  They are the moments the TV-football fans will never experience, and that's what sustains the rest of us, chasing that moment.

Out of interest what era did you nearly sack it?  If I had to pick a time that I would have stopped going if any, it would have been 86 upto the moment Savage scored at Wrexham.  From that moment I was re-hooked.  I sometimes wonder how different things might have been if we'd had a sustained period in Div 4 with crowds of 3,500.

Just had a look

November 82, so earlier than I thought

I'd guess the problem was I was going on my own

Not long after I started doing aways and made some great mates

Also met meldrew and undies

Two of the kids, no interest at all.

Middle kid loves playing and is in the school team, currently the only girl. She's a great defender, runs all day long. Taken her to a few of those BWFC school holiday football camps.

However shes a southerner, goes to school in Canterbury, so despite the fact she's been to Bolton a few tines, had the kit etc she's now a Liverpool fan. The fact she's growing up at a time when we're a bit shit doesn't help. I'm hoping when she's older she'll come back to us.

That era was grim, 5,060 on v Leicester - the previous home game we lost 4-1 to the mighty Shrewsbury.  But we went on a decent run after that which prevented crowds falling further (and some biggish games - Leeds, Blackburn, Newcastle, Burnley, Oldham).  But yes it ended in relegation on last day at Charlton, we would have lost a lot of fans that year, and the next few years.
