Dodgy mechanics

Must admit I use Kwik Fit as a matter of course as my old mechanic passed away a couple of years ago. Booked in there tomorrow morning in fact for a free battery check (left the headlights on for hours the other day 🙄) and, after reading this thread, I’m now fucking shitting it.

Leaving your headlights on won’t fuck your battery mate. Might flatten it but wouldn’t ruin it. They will try and tell you summat is wrong though.

Yeah it went flat but all good now. Wanted to get it checked just in case but might change my mind now!

Take it to a local garage ask them to test it. Or halfords. Even a small car spare shop will test it. Takes 30 seconds.  Just avoid Kwikfit.

Halfords definitely used to be cunts.

Once went for a free brakes check at and they said all was OK. I got home and checked my nuts, hehe, and on every wheel i could turn them with my fingers.

Went a couple of years later to a different  branch because my exhaust sounded like a Subaru. Told me I needed a full new exhaust. Turned out, after talking to a local garage it was just a minor weld required.  I rang them to say I didn't need the work doing and they had a hissy fit and that my entire exhaust system was in the skip. After a heated conversation, I went back and the manager literally threw my keys at me. I went and got it welded at a cost of £40 rather than their £300.

You really can't put a price on a good local garage.

Chorley Street Garages were ace, they've now relocated to Hindley Green so I don't use them any more, but anyone out that way should  do. Top lads.

Thanks for the heads up, I'm on the lookout for a decent garage since my man retired. 👍

If it's  the same place i'm thinking of, Chorley St garage used to be owned by a fella called Stan Morton who was an old school mechanic and a firm but fair Mot tester. I used to get all my Mot's done there many years ago.

Stan passed away a while back, but i think his lads might have carried on with the business.

Not too far for me is Hindley Green, i might seek them out.

In my opinion you are always better off using a recommended local garage with a decent reputation - rather than a national company with branches all over the UK.
