We can't, Shirley, be debating whether or not Madonna wS a great player.

But he was a moral vacuum both whilst a player and off field at that time & later.

Too many people féted him and forgave him any misdemeanor when he might have benefited from firmer management.

So, extremely talented, hugely flawed.

If you're on about  Gary Lineker being up with the all time greats you are another one having a laugh.

England came up against a genuine world class striker two years later in Euro 88, Van Basten put 3 in  the back of their net. Mind you England were so wank in 88 even the Irish beat them. Lineker, Beardsley, Barnes - all over rated players in the team battered by Van Basten and embarrassed by the Irish.I suppose those defeats were somebody elses fault

I

Didn't Lineker have Hepatitis at Euro 88 ? , and whatever you say regarding Lineker being over rated he scored 10 Goals at the World Cup finals , which by the way was 10 more than Van Basten ever managed at a World Cup.

You tell the bitter red twat Dusan. oh and Rodge this thread is about Maradona so i dont care about how shit England were subsequently.  We didnt even qualify for world cups in 90"s so we all.know how shit we were. We dont need a rag pointing that out

Can't stand Lineker at the mo, overpaid and hate his opinions and how he voices them. But as a modern day striker playing up front on his own, he was superb, better than Shearer IMHO, for what its worth

If Messi and Ronaldo both put 2 stone weight on each, Messi would be the better player

Messi has that touch of magic that can’t be taught.

Ronaldo is a wonderful player but has worked on his physicality, speed and shooting.

Messi just has that touch.

Messi can't head it like Ronaldo can

You are having a laugh. At that level the best team wins the tournament.

Greece?

And we had Harry Kane as top scorer last time out

But I agree, too much bitterness towards a goal from 34 years ago

Bearing in mind we went ahead in the World Cup final with a questionable one in 66

Nah, Lineker barely scored outside the six yard box, a top quality finisher no doubt in the same bracket as van nistelroy, but shearer could twat them in from distance

It wasn't forearmed into the net though.

Anyway, the reaction over there is something else. Bonkers.

They're loopy.

On reflection I was harsh on Lineker, he was a world class goalscorer although in a lower tier of world class than some including Van Basten. It's all about opinions, mine is that Van Basten was the world's best attacking player in the gap between Maradona's peak and Messi/Ronaldo.

There were some great players in that era but none quite up with the footballing gods of Maradona, Ronaldo and Messi. If millions of football fans were polled i reckon the top 3 in no particular order would be Ronaldo, Zidane and Van Basten with my vote going to Van Basten.

Well a slightly different way to ask it. Let's say you've got a team who are "doing a Leicester" in the Prem, so really motoring, playing for each other and getting the results without mega stars being present. But unlike Leicester's season, a couple of the big boys are also on form and so you need summat extra to keep up with them and then crack on to the title.  You get to draft in one player of your choice from of all the great names in the thread, at any position, in order to push on for the title. Which one?

Messi

Or Zidane

Or Lothar Matthaus ( Not on any list on here yet, but probably my favourite midfielder of all time)
